What is an editorial internship summer?

An Editorial Internship Summer is a temporary, usually paid or for-credit position offered by publishing houses, magazines, newspapers, or digital media companies during the summer months. Interns support editors in tasks such as fact-checking, proofreading, researching, and occasionally writing content. This internship provides hands-on experience in the editorial process and helps students or recent graduates build their skills and professional networks in the publishing industry.

What types of projects and tasks can I expect to work on during a summer editorial internship?

During a summer editorial internship, you'll typically assist with a variety of tasks such as researching topics, fact-checking articles, proofreading content, and helping develop story ideas. You may also support editors in managing submissions, preparing content for publication, and coordinating with writers or other departments. This hands-on experience is designed to give you insight into the editorial workflow, improve your writing and editing skills, and help you build a strong professional network within the publishing industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an editorial intern during the summer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Editorial Intern, you need strong writing, editing, and research skills, typically supported by coursework in English, journalism, or communications. Familiarity with content management systems (CMS), word processing software, and editorial style guides like AP or Chicago Manual is important.
