Chief, Division of Gastroenterology & Hepatology

Department of Internal Medicine (MD, DO)

Job Overview

The chief of the Division of Gastroenterology and Hepatology in the Department of Internal Medicine will provide strategic leadership and direction for all aspects of the division. The chief will be responsible for planning, policy, operations, and oversight of the division’s academic, research, and clinical programs. The role includes financial authority over the state‑appropriated budget, extramural research funding, philanthropic funding, and other financial matters in accordance with applicable University policies and practices. The chief will have discretion in the recruitment and retention of division faculty who report directly to the chief.

Reporting lines include the chair of the Department of Internal Medicine (academic activities) and the CEO of Banner – University Medical Group (clinical activities at B‑UMCP). The leader will collaborate with University of Arizona academic leadership, Banner‑U‑Medicine leadership, and key external stakeholders and community officials. The successful candidate must qualify for an appointment as an associate or full professor and actively participate in teaching, clinical service, and/or scholarly work.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Provide faculty affairs leadership for the division
  • Oversee educational and training programs
  • Develop and manage research programs
  • Direct patient‑care programs within the division
  • Recruit and retain faculty and staff
  • Lead physician services at Banner Health hospitals
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Track record of national distinction in teaching, clinical care, and research discovery in an academic medical department or comparable environment
  • National distinction through service on national committees or professional societies
  • Commitment to patient care with a service‑oriented, team‑based philosophy across all disciplines, departments, and specialties
  • Successful track record of recruitment and development of faculty, trainees, and students
Minimum Qualifications
  • MD, DO, or equivalent accredited degree
  • Board certified by the American Board of Internal Medicine and eligible for unrestricted medical licensure in Arizona
  • Board certification in Gastroenterology
  • Eligible for medical staff membership at B‑UMCP
  • Greater than five years of progressively complex administrative experience (e.g., program leader, center/section director) in an academic medical center setting
Preferred Qualifications
  • Additional health profession degree (e.g., PhD, MPH, MS)
  • Experience in developing and implementing new academic programs and services
  • Leadership in a major subspecialty division/section at an academic internal medicine department
