What is an EDI Integration Engineer?

EDI Integration Engineers are specialized IT professionals who design, implement, and maintain Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) systems that enable organizations to exchange business documents electronically with partners and customers. They work with various EDI standards and protocols, ensure data accuracy, and troubleshoot integration issues. Their role is crucial in automating transactions such as purchase orders, invoices, and shipping notices, helping businesses improve efficiency and reduce manual processing errors.

What are common challenges faced by an EDI Integration Engineer when onboarding new trading partners?

EDI Integration Engineers often encounter challenges such as differing data formats, varying compliance standards, and the need to map partner-specific requirements during new partner onboarding. Successfully addressing these involves close communication with both internal teams and external partners, thorough testing, and meticulous documentation. Proactive problem-solving and a strong understanding of EDI standards like X12 and EDIFACT are essential to ensure a smooth and efficient integration process.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EDI Integration Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EDI Integration Engineer, you need expertise in EDI standards (such as X12, EDIFACT), data mapping, and integration principles, often supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with EDI translators, middleware platforms (like IBM Sterling or MuleSoft), and scripting languages, as well as certifications in relevant integration tools, is typically required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication skills help you collaborate with stakeholders and resolve integration issues efficiently. These skills ensure the seamless exchange of business data between organizations, minimizing errors and supporting efficient operations.

Job description

Company Overview:

Argon Medical Devices is a global manufacturer of specialty medical products. Argon offers a broad line of medical devices for Interventional Radiology, Vascular Surgery, Interventional Cardiology and Oncology. Argon’s brand is recognized for best-in-class products that improve patient outcomes via percutaneous, image-guided procedures. Our values describe what we believe in and how we operate. These values are our moral compass which guide our decisions and define the deeply held beliefs and principles of our organizational culture. Argon Medical is a family of individuals united by a mission and culture which continue to grow stronger every day.

Position Overview:

The EDI & Integration Architect is a senior role in Argon’s Enterprise Applications group, responsible for the design, development, implementation, support, and continuous improvement of Argon’s electronic data interchange (EDI) and system-to-system integrations across the enterprise. This role owns the integration landscape that connects Argon’s ERP (QAD) with internal and external platforms—including Salesforce, Microsoft Azure, AWS, and trading-partner and cloud gateways—and serves as the technical liaison between internal business teams, trading partners, and third-party managed-service and software vendors as it relates to electronic partner transactions.

This position tracks EDI and integration performance, analyzes trends, identifies gaps within processes and data flows, leads root-cause analysis and error-handling strategy, and takes or directs appropriate action to implement reliable, well-documented, standards-compliant solutions that positively impact Argon’s manufacturing and distribution operations.

What you will do:
  • Architect, develop, and maintain EDI, EMT and B2B integrations between QAD ERP and internal/external systems (Salesforce, Azure, AWS, and trading-partner platforms), with a focus on reliability, minimal customization, and maximum integration.
  • Serve as subject-matter expert for EDI transactions and the end-to-end integration landscape to Customer Support teams, the IT team, trading partners, and vendors.
  • Analyze business requirements for inbound and outbound EDI/B2B transactions and develop functional and technical specifications.
  • Create, migrate, and maintain EDI translation maps, functions, and dependencies across environments (e.g., development, test, and production, including cloud migrations), ensuring comprehensive migration and validation to avoid gaps.
  • Set up and maintain trading-partner connections and communication methods—including SFTP/FTP, AS2, VAN, and direct/API integration—and manage certificate and key exchange securely.
  • Monitor EDI and integration production systems, troubleshoot day-to-day processing issues on the integration layer, and take or direct appropriate action to resolve system failures.
  • Identify and resolve the root cause of EDI and integration problems in a multi-vendor, multi-provider, and multi-platform environment (e.g., QAD, Salesforce, Azure, AWS, and iPaaS/middleware).
  • Lead the design and evaluation of EDI/integration error-handling frameworks—assessing native QAD, Salesforce Service Cloud, Boomi, and Azure options—to reduce manual exception handling by business teams and improve visibility.
  • Plan and execute integration and EDI testing, including UAT—defining integration scenarios, test scripts, and acceptance criteria, and coordinating testing with trading partners, customers, and vendors.
  • Manage trading-partner and customer EDI/integration initiatives (new partner onboarding, migrations, and upgrades), coordinating cross-functional and external stakeholders.
  • Coordinate and manage external vendors and managed-service providers (e.g., integration platform and ERP support) to deliver and support EDI and integration solutions.
  • Create and maintain documentation of integration scenarios, technical designs, data flows, and process/error-handling workflows.
  • Continuously improve EDI/B2B and integration infrastructure and technology (workflow, translation, monitoring, and upgrades), and maintain current knowledge of EDI standards to ensure Argon conforms to electronic-trading standards for the industry.
  • Understand QAD/ERP functions as they relate to tables, integrations, and user requirements.
  • Benchmark processes—evaluate areas of opportunity, identify process gaps, and create plans to increase performance, productivity, and effectiveness; create and execute technical project plans and prepare status reporting, revising as requirements change.
Skills for Success:
  • Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent work experience required.
  • 5+ years of EDI and ERP integration experience within a manufacturing or distribution environment.
  • Demonstrated experience with EDI communications, translation mapping, and system-to-system integrations.
  • Experience coordinating trading partners and managing external vendors.
  • EDI communications and translation‑mapping experience required (Direct, VAN, AS2, FTP/SFTP; ANSI X12, EDIFACT).
  • EDI and integration experience with ERP systems (QAD preferred).
  • Experience integrating cloud and SaaS platforms (e.g., Salesforce, Microsoft Azure, AWS) and iPaaS/middleware (e.g., Boomi).
  • SQL query development experience and a good understanding of data schemas.
  • Strong root‑cause analysis and troubleshooting in multi‑vendor, multi‑platform environments.
  • Vendor management and trading‑partner coordination.
  • Project management with emphasis on operations and testing/UAT.
  • Strong collaborator with a team‑oriented focus; effective communicator across technical and business audiences.
  • Creative and forward thinking as it relates to new ideas and solutions; strong time management, task prioritization, and analytical skills.
