What is an EDI Account Manager?

An EDI Account Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing and managing the electronic data interchange (EDI) relationships between a company and its business partners. They coordinate the implementation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of EDI systems, ensuring smooth and accurate electronic transactions. EDI Account Managers also act as the main point of contact for clients regarding EDI-related issues and work closely with IT and business teams to optimize data exchange processes. Their role is crucial for companies involved in supply chain, retail, or any industry where electronic document exchange is essential.

How does an EDI Account Manager typically collaborate with internal technical teams and external clients to resolve data integration issues?

As an EDI Account Manager, you’ll frequently serve as the primary liaison between your organization’s technical teams and external clients. When data integration issues arise, your role involves gathering detailed information from clients, translating business needs into technical requirements, and coordinating with IT or EDI specialists to implement solutions. Strong communication and project management skills are essential, as you’ll be expected to provide timely updates to clients and ensure smooth resolution of complex problems. This collaborative approach helps maintain client satisfaction and ensures the ongoing reliability of EDI processes.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an EDI Account Manager, and why are they important?

To thrive as an EDI Account Manager, you need a strong understanding of Electronic Data Interchange (EDI) processes, supply chain operations, and account management, often backed by a degree in business, IT, or a related field. Familiarity with EDI platforms, ERP systems, and data mapping tools, as well as knowledge of industry standards like ANSI X12 or EDIFACT, is typically required. Excellent communication, problem-solving abilities, and customer service skills help you build strong client relationships and resolve technical issues quickly. These skills ensure smooth data exchanges, satisfied clients, and efficient business operations in a digital trading environment.

Job description

About Primary Freight
Primary Freight is a freight brokerage with eight agent branches across the United States. As part of Primary Companies, we work alongside our asset based trucking operations, pallet manufacturing, and sawmill divisions to offer customers complete logistics solutions.
About the Role
We are looking for experienced Freight Agents to join our network as independent contractors. This is a 1099 contract position, not a W2 employee role, and compensation is 100% commission with no base pay. We state this upfront because this structure works best for agents who already have freight experience and an existing or transferable book of business.
As a Freight Agent, you bring your customer relationships and book the freight. Primary Freight provides the back office, technology, insurance, and carrier network so you can focus on moving loads and growing your accounts.
Day to Day Responsibilities
  • Prospect and contact potential shipping customers to build client relationships
  • Quote, book, and manage shipments from pickup through delivery
  • Negotiate rates with carriers and customers
  • Track loads and communicate proactively with shippers and carriers
  • Complete shipment documentation and resolve transit issues as they arise

What Primary Freight Provides
  • Cargo and liability insurance coverage
  • DAT load posting access and Truckstop login
  • Carrier onboarding and tracking software with access to 40,000+ vetted carriers
  • Company email, TMS access, and LTL portal access
  • EDI and customer portal capability
  • Customer invoicing, collections, and back office support
  • Orientation, training, and support transitioning existing customers
  • Fast carrier setup for new contracts

Qualifications
  • 2+ years of experience in freight brokerage, logistics, or transportation (required)
  • An existing or transferable book of business, or demonstrated ability to build one
  • Working knowledge of freight brokerage operations and carrier negotiation
  • Strong communication, negotiation, and problem solving skills
  • Background in customer service and account management

How Pay Works
This role operates on a revenue share model. You keep a percentage of the gross margin on every delivered load. Primary Freight's share covers the services we provide on your behalf, including insurance, TMS and load board software, carrier vetting and onboarding, customer invoicing, collections, and back office support. There are no fees, no startup costs, and nothing to purchase. You are never charged for the tools or support.
