What are common challenges faced by professionals working in edge computing roles, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in edge computing roles often face challenges such as ensuring seamless data processing across distributed devices, maintaining network reliability, and implementing robust security measures for decentralized systems. Additionally, collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams—including IoT engineers, cloud architects, and cybersecurity experts—is vital to address integration and performance issues. Staying updated on evolving edge technologies and industry best practices can help professionals navigate these challenges and deliver efficient, secure solutions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an edge computing engineer?

To thrive as an Edge Computing Engineer, you need expertise in distributed systems, networking, cloud/edge infrastructure, and a relevant degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with containerization tools (like Docker and Kubernetes), IoT platforms, and edge-specific frameworks such as Azure IoT Edge or AWS Greengrass is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, adaptability, and effective communication help drive innovation and cross-functional collaboration. These skills are crucial for building reliable, scalable edge solutions that process data efficiently and securely at the network's edge.

What is an edge computing job?

Edge computing jobs involve developing, deploying, and maintaining technology that processes data closer to where it is generated, rather than relying on centralized data centers or cloud computing. Professionals in this field work on optimizing network performance, building edge devices, ensuring data security, and enabling real-time analytics for industries like manufacturing, healthcare, and telecommunications. Typical roles include edge software engineers, network architects, and IoT specialists. These jobs require knowledge of distributed systems, networking, and often experience with hardware integration.

What is the difference between Edge vs Network Technician?

Work EnvironmentEdge computing sites, data centers, remote locationsOffice settings, data centers, client sites
Industry UsageIT, telecommunications, cloud servicesIT, telecommunications, networking companies
Common Search/ComparisonEdge vs Network Technician

The main difference between Edge and Network Technician roles lies in their focus areas. Edge professionals specialize in deploying and managing edge computing devices and infrastructure at remote or distributed locations, often requiring knowledge of edge-specific hardware and security. Network Technicians primarily focus on maintaining and troubleshooting network infrastructure within organizations or data centers. While both roles require similar certifications and work in related environments, Edge roles emphasize distributed computing environments, whereas Network Technicians concentrate on core network systems.

Job Summary:

The IoT / Edge Architect will serve as the technical lead for the design, integration, and management of secure, scalable IoT and edge computing solutions supporting the client. This role is responsible for architecting the ingestion, processing, and secure management of dosimeter and sensor data from distributed edge devices through AWS GovCloud, ensuring compliance with DoD Impact Level 4 (IL4) and FedRAMP requirements. The architect will collaborate with cross-functional teams-including cloud, cybersecurity, DevSecOps, and stakeholders-to deliver resilient, compliant, and high-performing IoT solutions that support mission-critical and safety objectives.

Job Duties:

  • IoT/Edge Solution Architecture: Lead the technical strategy and design for inheriting, integrating, and modernizing client's IoT-based radiation exposure tracking environment. Define requirements for data ingestion, modeling, system interoperability, and secure device management.
  • Cloud Integration & Compliance: Architect and oversee AWS GovCloud landing zone setup, ensuring government compliance, secure network segmentation, and adherence to DoD CC SRG IL4 standards. Define and enforce cloud security configurations, policies, and audit requirements.
  • Device Management & Security: Implement secure onboarding, provisioning, and lifecycle management for IoT devices (e.g., dosimeters, gateways) using AWS IoT Device Management, X.509 certificates, and mTLS. Oversee certificate rotation, anomaly detection, and device posture monitoring via AWS IoT Device Defender.
  • Data Pipeline & Processing: Design and optimize data flows from edge devices to cloud storage (S3), message queues (SQS), and processing layers (Lambda, Glue, Aurora). Ensure data encryption at rest and in transit, and implement robust ETL pipelines for legacy and real-time data.
  • DevSecOps & Automation: Guide DevSecOps teams in automating infrastructure deployment (IaC), compliance checks, and continuous monitoring using AWS-native tools (CloudFormation, Config, CloudWatch, Security Hub).
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Serve as the senior technical representative in engagements with stakeholders, Client, and NTT DATA leadership. Communicate architecture decisions, risks, and solution tradeoffs to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Documentation & Knowledge Transfer: Maintain comprehensive architecture documentation, technical artifacts, and processes to enable seamless scaling and knowledge continuity across future task orders

Basic Qualifications:

  • Master's level degree in Computer, Electrical or Electronics Engineering or Mathematics with field of concentration in computer science.
  • Minimum 10 years of professional engineering experience in distributed systems, embedded software, or edge/IoT architectures, including 5 years in a senior or lead architect role.
  • Minimum 5 years of  design and implementation experience with IoT or edge platforms, including development of devicetogateway communication, edge processing pipelines, and secure devicemanagement workflows.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience with modern programming languages used in IoT/edge systems (such as Python, C/C++, Go, or Java)
  • Minimum 3 years of experience architecting solutions on AWS, Azure, or GCP, including at least 1 year deploying or designing AWS IoT, AWS Greengrass, or equivalent edgecompute frameworks.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience applying security controls for IoT/edge systems, including certificatebased authentication, secure firmware update processes, FIPScompliant cryptography, and RBAC/IAM models.
  • Minimum 3 years of experience developing containerized or microservicesbased architectures.
  • Minimum 2 years integrating edge or IoT systems into secure CI/CD pipelines, automated deployment frameworks, and environmentascode configurations.
  • Ability to obtain a secret clearance.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with AWS IoT, AWS Greengrass, or Azure IoT Edge in regulated or missioncritical environments.
  • Background supporting DoD, DHS, or other federal programs involving operational technology or fielddeployed sensing devices.
  • Knowledge of secure firmwareupdate pipelines, deviceidentity lifecycle management, and modern hardwarerootoftrust technologies.
  • Familiarity with Navy or government cybersecurity frameworks, including RMF, STIGs, and supplychain-risk controls for connected devices.
