What is the difference between Edge Solutions vs Network Engineer?

AspectEdge SolutionsNetwork Engineer
CertificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco certificationsCCNA, CCNP, Cisco certifications
Work EnvironmentEdge computing devices, IoT environments, distributed networksCorporate offices, data centers, network operations centers
Industry UsageTelecommunications, IoT, cloud servicesIT, telecommunications, enterprise networks

Edge Solutions professionals focus on deploying and managing computing resources at the network edge, often involving IoT and distributed systems. Network Engineers design, implement, and maintain core network infrastructure. While both roles require similar certifications and work in related environments, Edge Solutions specialists concentrate on edge devices and distributed architectures, whereas Network Engineers focus on traditional network infrastructure.

What types of cross-functional collaboration are typical for an Edge Solutions role, and how do these interactions impact project success?

Professionals in Edge Solutions regularly collaborate with teams from IT, network engineering, cybersecurity, and application development to design, deploy, and maintain edge computing environments. These interactions are essential for ensuring seamless integration of edge devices, optimizing data flows, and maintaining security standards. Effective communication and collaboration enable faster troubleshooting and innovation, directly impacting the success and scalability of edge projects.

What are Edge Solutions?

Edge Solutions refer to technologies and services that process data at or near the source of data generation, rather than relying solely on centralized cloud data centers. This approach reduces latency, improves real-time decision-making, and enhances data privacy by keeping sensitive information closer to where it is created. Edge Solutions are commonly used in industries like manufacturing, healthcare, and transportation to support applications such as IoT devices, autonomous vehicles, and smart infrastructure. By leveraging Edge Solutions, organizations can achieve faster insights, optimize bandwidth usage, and enhance overall system performance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Edge Solutions Architect, and why are they important?

To thrive as an Edge Solutions Architect, you need expertise in distributed computing, networking, and cloud-edge integration, typically supported by a degree in computer science or engineering. Familiarity with edge computing platforms, IoT protocols, virtualization tools, and relevant certifications such as AWS Certified Solutions Architect or Microsoft Azure certifications is highly valued. Strong analytical abilities, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are essential soft skills for collaborating with multidisciplinary teams and clients. These skills ensure the design and deployment of robust, scalable solutions that meet the complex requirements of edge computing environments.

Job description

Edge Processing Solutions Engineer
The Opportunity:
We build Go-based software systems that run at the tactical edge that are disconnected, resource-constrained, and often airborne or forward-deployed. Our portfolio spans ISR data pipelines, autonomous platform integration, and the underlying Kubernetes runtime that makes any of it deployable in the real world.
This role leads an engineering team of up to 8 engineers on a new effort growing out of an established program. You will own the technical direction end-to-end, including architecture, delivery, customer engagement, and the people doing the work. This is a hands-on lead role with the expectation to also be in the codebase.
What You'll Do:
  • Lead architecture and delivery for an edge software product line from prototype through fielded capability.
  • Build and maintain Go services that operate in disconnected and intermittently connected environments.
  • Design Kubernetes-native systems, including workload architecture, Helm chart authoring, custom controllers or operators where warranted, and clean separation between platform and application concerns.
  • Own the Kubernetes runtime story, including K3S on edge hardware, image distribution into air-gapped enclaves, GPU scheduling, and read-only root filesystems.
  • Establish and maintain CI/CD pipelines such as GitLab CI or GitHub Actions, that produce signed, scanned, and reproducible artifacts.
  • Integrate with tactical data standards such as Cursor on Target or TAK, and ISR sensor pipelines.
  • Mentor engineers, set technical standards, and run code review with a high bar.
  • Interface directly with the customer to translate operator needs into technical requirements and back again.
  • Support proposal and capture work for follow-on scope.

Join us. The world can't wait.
You Have:
  • 6+ years of experience with software engineering in a professional environment
  • 2+ years of experience in a technical lead or engineering lead role
  • Experience using Go as a primary systems language for production
  • Experience deploying and operating Kubernetes in production
  • Experience with disconnected or air-gapped software delivery, including image syncing, registry mirroring, offline package management, and updating strategies for systems that cannot phone home
  • Experience with Linux at the systems-level, including systems, networking, filesystems such as overlays or tempfs, and containers under the hood
  • Ability to mentor engineers and raise the technical bar of a team
  • Secret clearance
  • Bachelor's degree in CS or Computer Engineering

Nice If You Have:
  • Experience with the CoT or TAK ecosystem, including TAK Server, ATAK or WINTAK, and CoT message handling
  • Experience in ISR, UAS, or autonomous platform software such as PX4, ArduPilot, MAVLink, or sensor integration
  • Experience with NVIDIA Jetson or edge GPU scheduling, including device plugins, MIG, and CUDA on Kubernetes
  • Experience writing or contributing to whitepapers, capability briefs, or technical proposal volumes
  • Experience using Rust or modern C++ for production
  • Experience using K3S, MicroK8s, or any flavor running on constrained hardware
  • TS/SCI clearance

Clearance:
Applicants selected will be subject to a security investigation and may need to meet eligibility requirements for access to classified information; Secret clearance is required.
