What is economic policy?
An Economic Policy job involves analyzing, developing, and implementing policies that influence economic growth, stability, and sustainability. They may focus on areas like taxation, trade, labor markets, or fiscal policy. Strong analytical skills, research abilities, and knowledge of economic theories are essential for success in this role.
What does an economic policy professional do?
Economic Policy professionals typically analyze statistical and economic data, conduct research to evaluate policy proposals, and prepare briefing materials or reports for decision-makers. They often collaborate with colleagues from various departments, such as legal, finance, and government affairs, to assess the broader implications of policy changes. Meetings with stakeholders or external experts are common, along with presentations or discussions on findings and recommendations. Balancing short-term issues with long-term strategic planning is a key part of the daily workflow in this role.
What skills and qualifications are needed for economic policy?
To thrive in Economic Policy, you need strong analytical skills, economic theory knowledge, and at least a bachelor's or master's degree in economics, public policy, or a related field. Excellent communication, collaboration, and critical thinking skills help you translate data into actionable policy recommendations and work with diverse stakeholders. These competencies are essential for developing sound economic strategies that influence real-world decisions and outcomes.

$91,644-$123,000
SCHOOL/UNIT DESCRIPTION:The Stanford Digital Economy Lab conducts groundbreaking research on the impact of the digital economy. We bring together an interdisciplinary group of researchers to study how digital technologies are transforming work, organizations, and the economy. Our insights help companies, policymakers, students, and professionals respond to the opportunities and challenges created by digitization. The Lab is part of the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered Artificial Intelligence and is co-sponsored by the Stanford Institute for Economic Policy Research.
POSITION SUMMARY:The Stanford Digital Economy Lab is seeking an Economic Data Analyst to perform complex technical and analytical work supporting Indicators, the Lab's public-facing platform for measuring the economic impact of artificial intelligence. Reporting to the Research Manager for Indicators, this position will query and integrate structured economic and labor-market data, independently produce standard and custom reports, devise methods for identifying patterns and trends, build non-routine analytical databases, and create publication-ready metrics and visualizations with minimal supervision.
The Economic Data Analyst will clean, validate, integrate, and document data from sources including ADP, the U.S. Census Bureau, job-posting providers, government agencies, surveys, and public repositories. The analyst will create analysis-ready relational tables, longitudinal datasets, derived indicators, data dictionaries, quality-control summaries, reports, charts, dashboards, and approved data extracts. The position will also develop and evaluate algorithms and statistical models related to AI adoption and exposure, employment, wages, occupations, industries, and skills demand; recommend improvements to data collection and reporting; respond to non-routine analytical and survey requests; implement data standards and common metric definitions; and test prototype pipelines, APIs, calculations, database changes, and visualizations for release readiness.
The successful candidate will work closely with economists, faculty, research scientists, postdoctoral scholars, graduate research assistants, data providers, engineers, designers, communications teams, and other Stanford partners. The role requires strong technical judgment, careful documentation, and the ability to translate complex findings into trustworthy information for academic, policy, industry, media, and public audiences.
This fixed-term position (3 years, renewable)
PREFERRED/DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:- Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or a combination of education and relevant experience, in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics, computer science, data science, or engineering.
- Strong SQL and Python skills; experience with R, cloud environments such as Google Cloud, Git-based version control, APIs, and visualization or business-intelligence tools is preferred.
- Experience working with large economic or labor-market datasets, including restricted, licensed, or confidential data.
- Knowledge of econometrics, data analysis, data visualization, reproducible research, and artificial intelligence measurement.
- Excellent analytical, organizational, written, and oral communication skills; ability to complete detailed work accurately under deadlines with minimal supervision.
- Creative, independent problem-solving skills and the ability to collaborate with researchers and technical partners from diverse backgrounds.
