Experience may have been gained in the public sector, private sector or through Volunteer Service. One year of experience refers to full-time work; part-timework is considered on a prorated basis. To ensure full credit for your work experience, please indicate dates of employment by month/day/year, and indicate number of hours worked per week, on your resume.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS - ALL GRADES:To be eligible for this position you must meet the following basic requirement (positive education requirement): You must have a bachelor's or higher degree in economics that included at least 21 semester hours in economics and 3 semester hours in statistics, accounting, or calculus.
OR
A combination of education and experience. The education must include courses equivalent to a major in economics, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. Examples of qualifying experience include (this list is not all inclusive):
  1. individual economic research assignments requiring planning, information assembly, analysis and evaluation, conclusions and report preparation;
  2. supervisory or project coordination assignments involving a staff of professional economists, and requiring the evaluation and interpretation of economic information; or
  3. teaching assignments in a college or university that included both class instruction in economics subjects and one of the following (1) personal research that produced evidence of results, (2) direction of graduate theses in economics, or (3) service as a consultant or advisor on technical economics problems.
The quality of the combination of education and experience must be sufficient to demonstrate that the applicant possesses the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform work in the occupation, and is comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of a full 4-year course of study with a major in economics.
AND
You must also meet the following requirements:
GS-11 Qualifications: In addition to the above basic requirement, you must have one (1) year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
  • Independently performing several or all of the steps necessary to complete a project for collecting economic data (e.g., employment statistics or marketing data) from primary sources such as records of business firms.
  • Assuming responsibility for various phases of initiation, planning, execution and control of special studies or projects.
  • Resolving complex technical problems or errors that require professional attention.
  • Monitoring effective use of resources to advise supervisors of necessary remedial action or changes.
  • Performing research to locate new sources of data and analysis.

GS-12 Qualifications: In addition to the above basic requirement, you must have one (1) year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include:
  • Assisting higher-level economists in the performance of a wide variety of economic studies to evaluate policies affecting tax administration and taxpayer compliance and to define feasible alternatives. This involves analyzing long-range effectiveness associated with the issues and resulting recommendations.
  • Preparing written narrative and/or briefing materials explaining the methodology used and supporting recommendations derived from the analyses.
  • Assisting in the development and evaluation of quantitative data to determine the relative effectiveness of various approaches to redesigning work processes and recommending different courses of action.
AND
You must also meet the following requirements:
  • MINIMUM AGE REQUIREMENT: Minimum age for federal employment is 18 years old, or at least 16 years old and have:
    • Graduated from high school or been awarded a certificate equivalent to graduating from high school; or
    • Completed a formal vocational training program; or
    • Received a statement from school authorities agreeing with your preference for employment rather than continuing your education
