Insight HRM is conducting a search for an experienced SBA Underwriter for the Michigan Certified Development Corporation (MCDC).

Michigan Certified Development Corporation (MCDC) is seeking a motivated individual to fill a full-time position as an SBA Underwriter based in the East Lansing office with 2 days onsite work required and 3 days hybrid-remote work available.

MCDC is a statewide organization that has been at the heart of economic development in Michigan for over 35 years. It is authorized by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) to administer SBA Loan Programs throughout the state. As the largest CDC in Michigan and one of the largest in the country, MCDC provides financing to small businesses, assisting them in growing their business, creating jobs and contributing to the overall economic growth in the state of Michigan.

Job Summary:

The SBA Underwriter utilizes their strong credit skills for evaluating SBA loan requests with responsibilities including reviewing applications to established criteria by product type, completing initial eligibility analysis, financial statement spreading, detailed analysis of repayment capacity and financial metrics, and initial credit approval package preparation. The SBA Underwriter may also provide the initial framework for various credit servicing activities, including establishing requirements for ongoing monitoring of financial statements, ratios or other performance metrics, collateral management, and overall performance of SBA loans.

Job Responsibilities:

  1. Applies knowledge of SBA Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) to evaluate loan applications for accuracy, completeness, and eligibility
  2. Spread and analyze financial data
  3. Assist the Loan Officers and Management in determining program eligibility
  4. Monitor and manage the collection of required documents
  5. Performs detailed analysis of financial statement spreads and repayment capacity for borrowers, affiliate business entities, and corporate and personal guarantors
  6. Reviews business and personal credit reports, as well as industry and market data
  7. Identifies and properly mitigates all risks associated with each assigned SBA application
  8. Prepares an appropriately detailed credit memorandum outlining terms and conditions for loan approval and closing, summarizing financial and business analysis, and addressing mitigation of all identified risks
  9. Package loan documents for submission to the SBA
  10. Review environmental and appraisal reports for acceptability with required laws and SBA SOP
  11. Cross-train others, as assigned.
  12. Maintains procedural documentation of relevant tasks/responsibilities.
  13. Prioritizes work according to necessity, complexity and deadlines.
  14. Understands the document collection requirements of each loan type.
  15. Demonstrates excellent working knowledge of all systems utilized by the department.
  16. Works harmoniously and collaboratively with team members to accomplish MCDC objectives.

Job Requirements:

Education: Bachelor's Degree in accounting, business, economics, finance or equivalent combination of education/experience preferred.

Certifications/Licenses: Valid Driver's License.

Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities, Training and Experience: Minimum of 2 years of prior SBA experience, commercial loan underwriting, financial analysis or portfolio management experience preferred. Extraordinary attention to detail, organization and problem-solving abilities. Successful completion of in-house training program. Ability to work collaboratively in a team and autonomously with little guidance. Displays the confidence and competence to gain/maintain MCDC's credibility. Takes initiative to learn, develop oneself and see thing through from start to finish. Proven interpersonal, communication and computer skills; ability to operate standard office equipment such as computers, copiers, etc.

Essential Physical Requirements:

  1. Ability to converse verbally and in writing with others.
  2. Ability to utilize general office equipment, Internet and various business software programs (i.e. MS office).
  3. Ability to work flexible hours as needed.
  4. Ability to travel within the community to attend various events, conferences and meetings with occasional overnight travel.
