Ecommerce makeup artists are in demand as online beauty brands and retailers seek professional content creators for product photos, videos, and tutorials. Skills in digital photography, video editing, and social media are valuable, and the role often involves remote work and flexible schedules. The growth of online shopping and beauty influencer marketing has increased opportunities for ecommerce makeup artists.

What is an ecommerce makeup artist?

An ecommerce makeup artist is a professional who specializes in applying makeup for models, influencers, or clients featured in online retail platforms. Their work is typically used for product photography, promotional videos, live streams, and virtual try-ons for beauty brands or online stores. They ensure that makeup looks are camera-ready and highlight the features of both the model and the products being sold. Ecommerce makeup artists must have a keen understanding of lighting, high-definition cameras, and current beauty trends. Their goal is to create visually appealing looks that drive sales and enhance the online shopping experience.

How does an ecommerce makeup artist typically collaborate with photographers and marketing teams during a product shoot?

As an Ecommerce Makeup Artist, you’ll often work closely with photographers, stylists, and marketing professionals to ensure the final visuals align with brand guidelines and online presentation standards. This includes preparing models for product shoots, making real-time touch-ups, and adapting makeup looks to suit various lighting conditions or digital requirements. Regular communication with the marketing team is important to understand campaign goals, target audiences, and any specific looks or trends to highlight. Collaboration and flexibility are key, as last-minute adjustments may be needed based on feedback during the shoot.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ecommerce makeup artist?

To thrive as an Ecommerce Makeup Artist, you need expertise in makeup application, understanding of current beauty trends, and a portfolio showcasing your work, often supported by formal training or cosmetology certification. Familiarity with digital photography, video production, lighting setups, and editing software such as Adobe Photoshop or Lightroom is typically required. Creativity, attention to detail, and strong communication skills help you collaborate with brands, models, and production teams. These skills ensure high-quality visual content that drives online engagement and boosts product sales in the competitive ecommerce beauty market.

What type of ecommerce makeup artist makes the most money?

Ecommerce makeup artists who specialize in high-end or luxury brands tend to earn higher incomes due to brand reputation and higher product prices. Additionally, those with advanced skills, strong online presence, and a large client base can command higher rates and commissions. Success often depends on marketing ability, social media following, and professional reputation.

Returning applicants: If you have worked for Thirteenth Floor Entertainment Group in a prior season, please contact your location manager directly regarding rehire status. Do not submit a new application through the online system.
What You'll Do
As our Seasonal Makeup Manager, you're the creative and operational leader of the department that transforms performers into nightmares. You'll balance hands-on artistry with team leadership, keeping every character show-ready, every artist supported, and every night flawlessly executed.
Department Leadership
  • Supervise, train, and mentor a team of makeup artists, providing guidance on technique, character execution, and professional standards
  • Assign artists to specific actors and characters based on skill set and nightly production needs
  • Conduct pre-shift meetings to communicate goals, character updates, and address challenges before doors open

Makeup Design & Quality Control
  • Oversee the design and execution of all character makeup, ensuring consistency and quality across the entire attraction
  • Collaborate with creative leadership to approve and refine makeup concepts throughout the season
  • Step in to personally apply makeup for complex characters or during high-volume peak periods

Scheduling & Time Management
  • Build and manage nightly makeup schedules to ensure all performers are show-ready on time
  • Coordinate with costume and stage management to align preparation timelines across departments
  • Monitor application progress each night, reallocating artists and adjusting workflows to meet deadlines

Inventory & Station Management
  • Maintain inventory of all makeup products, prosthetics, and tools; order supplies proactively to avoid shortages
  • Ensure all stations are clean, organized, and fully compliant with health and sanitation standards
  • Implement and enforce protocols for proper sanitation, product storage, and material handling

Collaboration & Communication
  • Serve as the primary liaison between the makeup team and costume, hair, special effects, and production departments
  • Foster a collaborative, creative environment where artists feel supported and inspired
  • Provide consistent feedback and development opportunities to grow your team's skills throughout the season

Adaptability & Problem Solving
  • Address last-minute character changes, actor substitutions, and product challenges in real time
  • Troubleshoot prosthetic, product, or application issues during live performances without disrupting show flow
  • Remain flexible to work in varying conditions including low light, outdoor environments, and tight prep windows

Training & Professionalism
  • Lead pre-season training sessions covering character designs, techniques, and safety standards
  • Stay current on SFX industry trends and products, sharing knowledge to continuously elevate the team's output
  • Model a calm, positive, and professional demeanor-especially in high-pressure moments-and hold the team to the same standard

What You Bring
  • Proven experience as a lead or supervisory makeup artist in theatrical, film, themed entertainment, or haunted attraction settings
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating advanced special effects, prosthetics, and character design skills
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational abilities with experience managing a creative team
  • Ability to balance hands-on artistry with department-level oversight and scheduling
  • Comfortable working in low light, outdoor, and fast-paced environments for extended shifts
  • Availability to work evenings, weekends, and all scheduled event dates-mandatory training and pre-show prep included
  • Must be 18 years of age or older
