What is an ecological engineer?

An Ecological Engineering job involves designing and implementing sustainable solutions that integrate natural ecosystems with human infrastructure. Professionals in this field work on projects such as wetland restoration, water treatment systems, and habitat conservation to enhance environmental resilience. They apply ecological principles to solve challenges related to pollution, resource management, and biodiversity preservation. Careers can be found in environmental consulting, government agencies, and research institutions, focusing on balancing development with ecological sustainability.

What does an ecological engineer do?

Ecological Engineers commonly spend their days designing, evaluating, and implementing projects that restore or enhance natural ecosystems—such as constructing wetlands, improving water management systems, or developing sustainable land-use plans. Tasks may include site assessments, data analysis, project modeling, preparing environmental impact reports, and collaborating with scientists, government agencies, and community stakeholders. Engineers in this field often visit project sites, monitor environmental outcomes, and adapt plans based on feedback from both the ecosystem and regulatory guidelines. This blend of office work and fieldwork provides variety and keeps professionals actively engaged in problem-solving. Successful ecological engineers excel in balancing technical challenges with creative solutions that support environmental sustainability.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an ecological engineer?

To thrive as an Ecological Engineer, you need a solid background in environmental engineering, biology, and systems design, usually supported by a related degree such as environmental engineering or ecological sciences. Familiarity with GIS software, ecological modeling tools, and current environmental regulations or certifications (like Professional Engineer, PE) is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving skills, teamwork, and effective communication are essential soft skills to excel in this interdisciplinary field. These capabilities are important for designing sustainable solutions that balance ecological integrity with human needs and regulatory requirements.

Are ecological engineers in demand?

Ecological engineering is a growing field as environmental concerns increase, leading to higher demand for professionals skilled in designing sustainable solutions for ecosystems, water management, and habitat restoration. Job opportunities are available in government agencies, consulting firms, and research institutions, often requiring knowledge of environmental regulations and environmental modeling tools.

Job Description

Job Summary
Position Summary: We are seeking a Production Engineer to support operations at our water chemical
treatment facility across two key areas: Production and Logistics. This role requires a hands-on
engineering professional who will optimize processes, ensure safety compliance, and drive continuous
improvement initiatives while managing both production operations and supply chain logistics.

Key Characteristics:

  • Strong Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills - The role requires conducting root cause analysis, investigating quality concerns and equipment non-conformances, performing supply chain optimization analysis, and continuously making decisions to improve process efficiencies. The engineer must be able to systematically identify issues, analyze complex data (like OEE metrics), and develop effective countermeasures.
  • Excellent Communication and Training Abilities - The position involves networking with site, regional, and global functions, performing classroom instruction for operations teams, coordinating with vendors, and managing cross-functional relationships between production and logistics. The engineer must effectively communicate technical concepts to diverse audiences and facilitate knowledge transfer.
  • Strong Organizational and Project Management Skills - The role requires balancing multiple responsibilities across two locations (Production and Logistics), managing over 36 bulk storage tanks, coordinating scheduling for materials/packaging/shipments, identifying and executing CAPEX/OPEX projects, and maintaining documentation. The engineer must prioritize tasks effectively, manage timelines, and ensure compliance across various operational areas simultaneously.

Duties & Responsibilities
Support all Environmental, Health, and Safety programs, policies, and regulations

  • Coordinate Management of Change (MOC) and Process Safety Management (PSM) operational opportunities
  • Perform process engineering activities including heat/material transfer, mass balancing, and equipment performance assessments
  • Conduct root cause analysis and implement appropriate countermeasures for operational issues
  • Network with site, regional, and global functions to drive best practices

Production Focus Areas:

  • Manage bulk storage, production equipment, auxiliary systems, and utilities
  • Track and analyze Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) data to identify quality concerns, yield losses, and equipment non-conformances
  • Monitor daily production and quality rates to ensure optimal performance
  • Identify, scope, and execute CAPEX and OPEX improvement projects
  • Provide training and classroom instruction to operations teams
  • Support production scheduling and maintain critical documentation

Logistics Focus Areas:

  • Balance daily administrative duties (25-40% of time) with field support activities
  • Coordinate raw material scheduling and ensure adequate storage space availability
  • Manage packaging schedules and prepare required documentation
  • Oversee shipment scheduling and documentation preparation
  • Conduct vendor management and maintain chemical organization per segregation/lean standards
