A typical day at an Eating Disorder Center involves working closely with a multidisciplinary team—including therapists, dietitians, nurses, and support staff—to provide comprehensive care to clients. Staff members may facilitate group and individual therapy sessions, conduct meal support, monitor patient progress, and participate in team meetings to discuss treatment plans. The work environment is collaborative and often fast-paced, requiring adaptability and strong communication skills to support patients in various stages of recovery. Regular training and professional development are also common, allowing staff to stay updated on best practices and evidence-based treatments.

AspectEating Disorder CenterNutrition Therapist
CredentialsVaries; often includes licensed mental health professionals, medical staff, and dietitiansTypically registered dietitians or nutritionists with certification
Work EnvironmentSpecialized clinics or treatment facilities focused on eating disorder recoveryPrivate practices, clinics, or healthcare settings providing nutritional counseling
Industry UsageBroadly used for comprehensive eating disorder treatment programsCommonly searched for personalized nutritional guidance

The main difference is that an Eating Disorder Center offers comprehensive treatment involving mental health and medical support, while a Nutrition Therapist focuses primarily on personalized nutritional counseling. Both roles are essential in supporting individuals with eating disorders, but the Center provides a multidisciplinary approach, whereas the Therapist specializes in dietary plans and nutritional education.

What is an Eating Disorder Center?

An Eating Disorder Center is a specialized healthcare facility that provides comprehensive treatment and support for individuals struggling with eating disorders such as anorexia, bulimia, and binge eating disorder. These centers offer a multidisciplinary approach, including medical care, nutritional counseling, therapy, and support groups to address both the physical and psychological aspects of eating disorders. The goal is to help patients achieve recovery, restore healthy eating habits, and improve overall well-being in a safe and supportive environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an Eating Disorder Center clinician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a clinician in an Eating Disorder Center, you need specialized knowledge in mental health, nutrition, and evidence-based treatment modalities, typically supported by licensure as a therapist, counselor, dietitian, or nurse. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHRs), treatment planning software, and certifications in eating disorder treatment (such as CEDS) are commonly required. Exceptional empathy, nonjudgmental communication, and the ability to foster trust are critical soft skills for supporting vulnerable clients and collaborating with multidisciplinary teams. These skills and qualifications are essential to provide safe, effective, and compassionate care that promotes recovery and wellbeing.

Registered Dietitian / Dietitian Eligible for Registration & LicensureMonte Nido Eating Disorder Center of Portland
Portland, Oregon

Monte Nido Eating Disorder Center of Portland is a premier eating disorder day treatment program serving adults seeking treatment for Anorexia Nervosa, Bulimia Nervosa, Binge Eating Disorder, Exercise Addiction, and related eating disorders. Through our Partial Hospitalization Program (PHP) and Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP), clients receive comprehensive care from an interdisciplinary team of clinical, medical, psychiatric, and nutrition professionals.

We are seeking a Registration/Licensure-Eligible Dietitian to join our team. This is an excellent opportunity for recent graduates, dietetic interns who have completed accredited programs, and early-career nutrition professionals who are eligible to sit for the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) exam and obtain state licensure.

As a key member of our multidisciplinary treatment team, the Dietitian collaborates closely with therapists, physicians, psychiatrists, nurses, and other healthcare professionals to provide exceptional nutrition care and support clients throughout their recovery journey.

What You'll Do
  • Provide individualized nutrition assessment, counseling, meal planning, and education.
  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary treatment teams to support client recovery goals.
  • Facilitate nutrition groups and meal support experiences.
  • Monitor client progress and adjust nutrition interventions as needed.
  • Participate in treatment planning, case consultations, and family support when appropriate.
  • Promote a positive, recovery-oriented relationship with food and body image.
Our Nutrition Philosophy

Our HAES®-informed approach to nutritional care emphasizes:

  • Recognition that healthy, recovered people come in all shapes and sizes.
  • Respect for body diversity and the belief that all bodies deserve nourishment and satiety.
  • Behavior-focused rather than weight-focused treatment philosophies.
  • Understanding that intentional weight loss efforts are often contraindicated in eating disorder recovery.
  • Supportive, homelike food environments that encourage healing and self-trust.

Nutrition programming across all Monte Nido programs is grounded in the principles of health, recovery, freedom from eating disorder behaviors, and developmentally appropriate progression toward internally directed eating.
