They are commonly found in industries such as manufacturing, retail, and office administration. These roles are ideal for individuals seeking straightforward work that does not require extensive decision-making or problem-solving. The Seasonal Band Instrument Cleaning Associate supports Schmitt Music’s band repair operations by cleaning, wiping down, and preparing student band instruments for inspection, repair, and return to ready-to-go inventory.

This position focuses specifically on band instruments and plays an important role in helping the repair team move instruments efficiently through the shop during the busy back-to-school season. The role does not independently diagnose or perform technical instrument repairs unless specifically trained and authorized to do so.

This position directly supports Schmitt Music customers and internal teams by representing our Core Values:

  • Serve your customer.

  • Do what’s right, not what’s easy.

  • Improve continuously.

Key Roles and Responsibilities

  • Clean and wipe down student band instruments according to established shop procedures.

  • Remove visible dirt, dust, fingerprints, residue, and other surface contaminants from instruments.

  • Clean and prepare instrument cases, including wiping surfaces and vacuuming case interiors when needed.

  • Clean mouthpieces and other approved accessories using established sanitation and handling procedures.

  • Safely handle brass, woodwind, and percussion instruments while preventing damage to finishes, keys, pads, slides, valves, and other components.

  • Organize cleaned instruments and move them to the appropriate staging area for inspection, repair, quality review, or fulfillment.

  • Identify visible damage, missing parts, or unusual conditions and communicate concerns to the BTR Shop Manager or assigned repair technician.

  • Follow established procedures for keeping instruments, cases, parts, and accessories together throughout the cleaning process.

  • Maintain an orderly, clean, and safe work area.

  • Properly use and store cleaning supplies, tools, and personal protective equipment.

  • Follow all safety, sanitation, and chemical-handling procedures.

  • Help maintain an efficient flow of instruments through the shop during peak seasonal demand.

  • Support technicians and other shop team members with instrument preparation and general workflow needs as assigned.

  • Foster a strong team-oriented culture by stepping in to support colleagues and help the team accomplish shared goals during busy periods or shifting priorities.

  • Perform other related duties as assigned.

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred.

  • Previous experience cleaning, handling, assembling, or maintaining musical instruments is helpful but not required.

  • General familiarity with band instruments preferred.

  • Ability to follow detailed cleaning, sanitation, and instrument-handling procedures.

  • Strong attention to detail and concern for product condition.

  • Ability to perform repetitive tasks accurately and consistently.

  • Strong reliability, attendance, and time-management skills.

  • Ability to work independently while also supporting a team-based production environment.

  • Willingness to learn about band instruments and proper handling techniques.

  • Ability to work necessary hours during peak seasonal demand, including occasional overtime when needed.

Work Environment & Expectations

  • This position is based onsite at Schmitt Music’s Bloomington, MN repair facility.

  • The role is performed primarily in a band instrument repair-shop environment and involves regular interaction with used student instruments, instrument cases, cleaning products, and repair-shop materials.

  • Work requires frequent standing, walking, reaching, bending, and repetitive hand movements.

  • Responsibilities may include lifting, carrying, and moving instruments and cases weighing up to approximately 30 pounds.

  • The employee may work around dust, residue, cleaning solutions, lubricants, and instruments returned from customer use. Required personal protective equipment and sanitation procedures must be followed.

  • This is a seasonal position expected to continue through October 31, 2026. Continued employment beyond that date is not guaranteed and will depend on business needs.

  • Schmitt Music operates a seasonal business, and repair demands increase significantly during the back-to-school period. Team members in this role are expected to demonstrate flexibility, urgency, and a strong team mindset during this peak season.

Note: This job description is not intended to cover every responsibility or task associated with the position and may evolve over time.
