Job description

The Maintenance Assistant plays a pivotal role in supporting the maintenance department's operations, encompassing preventative maintenance programs, as well as the repair, installation, modification, and relocation of plant equipment and facilities.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for facilities maintenance, ensuring optimal operational conditions.
  • Weld and repair equipment or tools as necessary to minimize downtime.
  • Conduct scheduled inspections of equipment and forklifts to preemptively address potential issues.
  • Collaborate with the maintenance team to facilitate equipment repairs and upkeep.
  • Strictly adhere to safety protocols for personnel and facility protection.
  • Execute tasks as directed by the maintenance manager or as mandated by plant management.
  • Fulfill any additional duties as assigned to support operational needs.

EXPERIENCE AND EDUCATION

High school education or GED required.  Team member must have the ability to work safely and efficiently in a fast-paced production environment.  Must be able to also meet the physical requirements of the job including the ability to lift 50 pounds and work on your feet on a concrete floor for the entire shift.  Team member must also be able to effectively communicate with others and work well in a team environment.

PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS: 

  • Position demands prolonged periods of standing, crouching climbing and/or walking.
  • Must have precise hand-eye coordination to handle equipment and materials effectively.
  • Ability to lift 50lbs or more, carry, and manipulate heavy materials and equipment.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces and work with heights exceeding 5 feet.
  • Capacity to endure repetitive tasks and maintain focus for extended periods.
  • Ability to hear warning signals and communicate effectively in a noisy environment.
  • Clear vision is necessary to inspect materials and read gauges and instruments accurately.
  • Problem-solving skills: Ability to troubleshoot and resolve issues that may arise during operations.
  • Capable of making quick decisions to optimize processes and minimize downtime.
  • Flexibility to adapt to changing production demands and work effectively under pressure.

EQUIPMENT, AIDS, TOOLS: 

This person must provide his/her own hand tools; have a valid driver’s license, be able to qualify for a hi-lo license; be able to use a riding lawn mower; be able to use a snow blower or a shovel to clear snow.  Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) including gloves, safety glasses, and steel-toed boots.

WORKING CONDITIONS:  

Work is in a steel manufacturing facility, situated at ground level for easy access from the parking lot, the Maintenance Assistant operates amidst various environmental factors and potential hazards. Stairs lead to the rail pit and slitter platforms, while short ladders facilitate movement from floor to conveyor on banding lines. Temperatures fluctuate seasonally, ranging from 60 to 95+ degrees, with intermittent exposure to diesel fumes from truck movements. Noise levels vary with machinery activity. Potential hazards include strains, cuts, and crush injuries. Within this dynamic setting, tasks entail:

SUPERVISION AND CO-WORKERS/ATTENDANCE REQUIREMENTS: 

Supervision and/or co-worker assistance are readily available. Attendance is closely monitored, as unscheduled absences may jeopardize meeting customer requirements due to insufficient staffing.

  • Failure to observe safety procedures may result in serious injury up to fatality and/or damage and loss of material or property.
  • Failure to follow established safety rules and procedures may result in loss of position or termination of employment.

  • Failure to promptly and properly repair equipment may result in safety hazards to employees.
  • Failure to properly install, repair, modify or relocate new and existing equipment promptly may result in production delays or customer delivery delays, which may in turn result in the loss of business.
  • Failure to follow a preventive maintenance schedule may result in damage to the equipment resulting in downtime while it is repaired, which may in turn result in the loss of business.
