Job Duties
Offering a $15,000 sign-on bonus for those new to state service with a one year written agreement and up to $140,000 student loan repayment paid over four years with a four-year employment agreement!
Eastern State Hospital (ESH), located in Williamsburg, Virginia, was founded in 1773, with a well-intentional emphasis on community focused mental health care. This state-of-the-art campus, situated on 500 acres, consists of two patient care buildings with 300 patients, and a highly skilled staff of over 900. Eastern State Hospital is part of the Department of Behavioral Health and Developmental Services (DBHDS) system and is accredited by the Joint Commission.
ESH is seeking a BC/BE PSYCHIATRIST to join our expanding team. Experience with an acute, adult inpatient population is preferred. As Head of the Treatment Team, this position is responsible for overall clinical leadership of a multidisciplinary treatment team and providing quality psychiatric care to an acute, adult inpatient population.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to: assessment/evaluation of psychiatric illnesses; overall clinical leadership to a multidisciplinary treatment team to develop effective and therapeutic treatment plans/interventions; psychiatric medication evaluation and management in accordance with rational psycho-pharmacological practices and documenting response to treatment; enter orders for diagnostic tests, medications, and other therapies and collaboration with consultants; attend court hearings on campus; timely completion of medical record documentation in accordance with hospital policies, procedures, regulatory standards and guidelines; coordination and continuation of the care for patients in adherence to state and federal guidelines and discharge planning; and serving as an on-call physician when scheduled as needed.
Position Overview:
- Inpatient facility with 302 adult beds (male & female)
- Civil, Forensic, NGRI, Jail/Prison Transfers, & Geriatrics
- Short and Long-term length of stay
- Caseload of 10-20 patients per psychiatric practitioner
- PCP coverage provided
- Full complement of interdisciplinary team members employing Recovering Treatment Model
- Office Hours: Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 5 PM
- Shared on-call (1-2 shifts per month) - compensated
Compensation & Benefits for Full-Time Medical Staff Members:

Minimum Qualifications
Board Certified / Board Eligible Psychiatrist
Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathy degree and completion of an accredited/approved psychiatry residency training program
Virginia State Medical License
DEA Registration
Available to work shared on-call duties and provide onsite medical and psychiatric coverage on weeknights, weekends, and holidays. Shifts are covered by all full-time medical staff members and outside PRN practitioners. The on-call pay rate is $140/hour.
Additional Considerations
Experience with an acute, adult inpatient population is preferred.
