Overview
We are seeking a credentialed Enrolled Agent to join our tax practice. This role centers on tax compliance, representation, and advisory services for individuals and small businesses. The ideal candidate holds an active EA designation or is actively pursuing one. They must demonstrate strong technical knowledge of federal and state tax law, and have experience managing client relationships through all phases of the tax process, including planning, preparation, IRS correspondence and resolution.
Note: We are not seeking a candidate with a CPA designation.
Responsibilities
- Prepare and review federal and state tax returns for individuals, small businesses, partnerships, and S-corporations
- Interview clients to obtain information on taxable income, deductible expenses, and relevant financial circumstances
- Furnish clients with sufficient guidance to ensure accurate and complete tax form completion
- Represent clients before the IRS and state tax authorities, including audits, collections, and appeals
- Correspond with taxing authorities to resolve notices, disputes, and complaints on behalf of clients
- Review financial records — including income statements and documentation of expenditures — to determine applicable forms and filing requirements
- Advise clients on tax planning strategies to minimize liability and ensure ongoing compliance
- Process client payroll, track W-9s, and prepare 1099s
- Prepare financial statements and cash flow reports for clients as needed
- Perform accounts receivable, accounts payable, and account reconciliation functions
- Support month-end close and year-end journal entries
- Maintain and organize client records and documents in accordance with firm procedures
- Identify opportunities for process improvement within tax and accounting workflows
Qualifications
- Active Enrolled Agent (EA) designation preferred
- Minimum 2–3 years of experience in public accounting or tax practice
- Experience preparing returns for individuals, partnerships, S-corps, and small businesses a plus
- Experience representing clients before the IRS preferred
- Proficiency with tax software and accounting platforms such as QuickBooks, Lacerte, or similar tools.
- Solid understanding of GAAP and financial statement preparation
- Familiarity with payroll processing and 1099 compliance
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to manage multiple client engagements during peak season
- Knowledge of estate and trust taxation is a plus
NOTE: This role is located in Walnut Creek, CA and will be expected to be in office Monday through Friday from 9am-5pm.
