How much do e3d piping design jobs pay per year?

As of Sep 4, 2026, the average yearly pay for e3d piping design in the United States is $114,740.00, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $100,000.00 and $127,000.00 per year, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is E3D piping design?

E3D Piping Design refers to the use of AVEVA E3D (Everything 3D) software for designing and modeling piping systems in industrial facilities such as oil & gas plants, power plants, and chemical factories. E3D enables engineers and designers to create detailed, intelligent 3D models of piping networks, integrating with other disciplines like structural and mechanical engineering. The software streamlines workflows, improves collaboration, and helps identify potential issues before construction begins, leading to cost and time savings. E3D Piping Designers are responsible for creating these models, ensuring compliance with engineering standards, and generating construction documentation.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an E3D piping designer?

To thrive as an E3D Piping Designer, you need a solid background in mechanical or piping engineering, strong spatial awareness, and familiarity with industrial piping standards. Expertise in AVEVA E3D software, as well as experience with CAD tools and knowledge of industry codes like ASME and ANSI, is typically required. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are essential soft skills for coordinating with multidisciplinary teams. These abilities ensure accurate, efficient piping layouts that meet safety, quality, and project requirements in complex engineering environments.

What are some common challenges E3D piping designers face when working on large-scale industrial projects?

E3D Piping Designers often encounter challenges such as managing complex model data, coordinating with multidisciplinary teams, and ensuring design compliance with industry standards. Large-scale projects frequently require seamless collaboration with civil, structural, and process engineers, which can lead to issues with version control and clash detection. Additionally, keeping up with project deadlines while maintaining high-quality, error-free deliverables can be demanding, but leveraging E3D’s automated features and regular team reviews helps mitigate these challenges.

What is the difference between E3D Piping Design vs Piping Drafter?

AspectE3D Piping DesignPiping Drafter
CertificationsCAD and piping design software training, possibly certifications in E3DCAD drafting certifications, often less specialized
Work EnvironmentEngineering offices, project sites, collaborative teamsDesign offices, drafting departments
ResponsibilitiesCreating detailed 3D piping models, layouts, and specificationsPreparing 2D piping drawings from sketches or models
Industry UsageOil & gas, petrochemical, engineering firmsConstruction, engineering, and manufacturing sectors

While both roles involve piping design, E3D Piping Design focuses on creating detailed 3D models and specifications using advanced software, whereas Piping Drafters primarily prepare 2D drawings based on existing models or sketches. E3D designers typically require more specialized training and work closely with engineers, making their roles more technical and design-oriented.
