How much do e&i designer jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 23, 2026, the average hourly pay for e&i designer in the United States is $39.19, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $31.49 and $44.95 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

How does an E&I Designer typically collaborate with engineers and other disciplines during a project?

E&I Designers routinely work closely with electrical and instrumentation engineers, as well as piping, mechanical, and civil teams, to ensure integrated project design. Collaboration often involves attending interdisciplinary meetings, sharing design documents, and resolving technical clashes or layout issues. This teamwork is essential for coordinating cable routing, equipment placement, and compliance with safety standards. Strong communication skills and the ability to interpret feedback from various stakeholders are key to success in this role.

What is the difference between E&I Designer vs Electrical Engineer?

AspectE&I DesignerElectrical Engineer
CredentialsTypically requires a diploma or associate degree in electrical or instrumentation technologyBachelor's degree in electrical engineering or related field
Work EnvironmentDesigning electrical and instrumentation systems primarily in industrial, manufacturing, or process plantsDesign, develop, and test electrical systems across various industries, including power, manufacturing, and infrastructure
Job FocusCreating detailed drawings, schematics, and specifications for electrical and instrumentation systemsAnalyzing electrical systems, performing calculations, and ensuring compliance with standards

While both roles involve electrical systems, E&I Designers focus on detailed design and drafting of instrumentation and electrical layouts, often working closely with engineers. Electrical Engineers have a broader scope, including system analysis, testing, and project management. Both roles are essential in industrial projects but differ in responsibilities and educational requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as an E&I Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as an E&I Designer, you need a solid background in electrical and instrumentation engineering principles, typically supported by a relevant degree or diploma and experience with industrial projects. Proficiency in CAD software (such as AutoCAD or SmartPlant), knowledge of industry standards, and familiarity with control systems are essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication help ensure accurate designs and collaboration with multidisciplinary teams. These skills are crucial for delivering reliable, safe, and compliant electrical and instrumentation designs in complex engineering environments.

What are E&I Designers?

E&I Designers, or Electrical and Instrumentation Designers, are professionals who create technical drawings and plans for electrical and instrumentation systems used in industrial settings such as factories, power plants, and processing facilities. Their work includes designing layouts for wiring, control panels, and instruments to ensure safe and efficient operation of equipment. E&I Designers often use specialized software like AutoCAD to develop their designs and work closely with engineers and project managers to meet industry standards and client requirements.
