What is a dynamometer technician?

Dynamometer Technicians are skilled professionals who operate and maintain dynamometers, which are devices used to measure force, torque, or power of engines and other mechanical systems. They set up test equipment, monitor tests, record data, and analyze results to ensure machinery meets performance and safety standards. These technicians work in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing, often collaborating with engineers to improve engine or component performance. Their role is crucial for product development, quality control, and troubleshooting mechanical systems.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a dynamometer technician?

To thrive as a Dynamometer Technician, you need a solid understanding of mechanical and electrical systems, hands-on technical aptitude, and typically a background in automotive technology or a related field. Familiarity with dynamometer testing equipment, data acquisition systems, and diagnostic software is essential, often supported by relevant technical certifications. Strong analytical thinking, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you troubleshoot issues and work collaboratively with engineering teams. These skills ensure accurate testing, reliable data collection, and smooth operation of vehicle or engine performance assessments.

What challenges do dynamometer technicians face during engine or component testing, and how are they addressed?

One common challenge Dynamometer Technicians encounter is managing unexpected equipment malfunctions or data inconsistencies during testing. These can disrupt test schedules and impact data accuracy. To address this, technicians routinely perform preventative maintenance, closely monitor real-time data, and communicate with engineers to quickly troubleshoot issues. Additionally, keeping detailed documentation helps identify recurring problems and refine testing protocols for future runs.

What is the difference between Dynamometer Technician vs Engine Test Technician?

AspectDynamometer TechnicianEngine Test Technician
CertificationsOften requires technical certifications in engine testing or mechanical systemsSimilar certifications, often with additional emphasis on engine diagnostics
Work EnvironmentLaboratories, testing facilities, engine test cellsEngine testing labs, research facilities, automotive or aerospace industries
Job FocusMaintaining and calibrating dynamometers, collecting test dataRunning engine tests, analyzing engine performance, troubleshooting
Industry UsageAutomotive, aerospace, industrial equipment testingAutomotive manufacturing, research and development, aerospace

Both roles involve engine testing and require technical skills, but a Dynamometer Technician primarily focuses on operating and maintaining dynamometers, while an Engine Test Technician conducts engine tests and analyzes performance data. The roles often overlap but differ in specific responsibilities and focus areas within engine testing environments.

Location: Raymond, OH
Work Schedule: Onsite, 5 days per week
Contract: Ongoing (Long-term)

Pay: $22 -$27/ hour

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Technician L2 to support advanced automotive testing and prototype vehicle development in Raymond, Ohio. This hands-on role will primarily support high-temperature chassis dynamometer testing, vehicle preparation, instrumentation, data acquisition, prototype part installation, and component changes.

The ideal candidate has a strong understanding of automobiles and hands-on experience working with vehicles, electrical systems, instrumentation, fabrication, or automotive testing. This position offers the opportunity to work directly with prototype vehicles and engineering teams in both controlled laboratory environments and demanding field-testing conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform vehicle preparation and testing for high-temperature chassis dynamometer testing, including installation of thermocouples, wiring harnesses, data acquisition equipment, and prototype components.
  • Install, inspect, modify, and troubleshoot instrumentation and test equipment used to collect vehicle and component data.
  • Assist with prototype part installation and component changes before and during chassis dynamometer testing.
  • Support engineers during testing by monitoring equipment, making necessary vehicle or component changes, and ensuring test setups meet established requirements.
  • Prepare vehicles for hot-weather field testing in extreme-temperature environments, including installation of prototype parts, thermocouples, harnesses, and data acquisition equipment.
  • Perform pre-test inspections and equipment checks to ensure vehicles and instrumentation are properly prepared for testing.
  • Support engineers during field testing by operating data acquisition equipment and, when qualified, driving test vehicles on public roads.
  • Assist with water-fording test preparation and testing, including following setup sheets and installing required instrumentation.
  • Prepare vehicles for snow-ingress testing, including component changes, instrumentation installation, and test execution.
  • Design, build, modify, troubleshoot, and repair electrical test harnesses and related wiring.
  • Maintain, inspect, and troubleshoot automotive test equipment and instrumentation.
  • Perform basic welding, fabrication, and modification work as needed to support testing and vehicle preparation.
  • Maintain accurate test setup information and follow established procedures, engineering instructions, and safety requirements.
  • Assist with additional automotive testing, prototype vehicle preparation, and engineering projects as assigned.
  • Work overtime and travel as required to support testing schedules and offsite test events.

Required Qualifications

  • Strong hands-on understanding of automobiles, vehicle systems, and automotive components.
  • Previous experience with automotive testing, vehicle preparation, instrumentation, data acquisition, or a closely related technical field.
  • Experience working with data acquisition hardware and software.
  • Strong vehicle electrical and instrumentation skills.
  • Ability to install, troubleshoot, and repair electrical wiring and test harnesses.
  • Welding and/or fabrication experience.
  • Ability to read and follow technical instructions, setup sheets, and test procedures.
  • Willingness and ability to travel for offsite testing.
  • Ability to work in extreme hot and cold weather conditions.
  • Ability to work overtime as required by testing schedules.
  • Self-motivated with strong attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of an engineering/test team.
  • Must be able to obtain a passport if international travel is required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Two-year technical degree in Automotive Technology, Electronics, Electrical Engineering Technology, or a related field.
  • Professional automotive technician or automotive testing experience.
  • Experience with prototype or development vehicles.
  • Experience with thermocouples, sensors, electrical harnesses, and instrumentation.
  • Experience with chassis dynamometers or other automotive test equipment.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience performing welding, fabrication, or custom vehicle modifications.

Work Environment

This is a highly hands-on position requiring technicians to work around vehicles, testing equipment, electrical systems, instrumentation, and prototype components. The role may involve extended periods working in high-temperature and cold-weather environments, as well as travel to locations used for extreme-weather vehicle testing.

Ideal Candidate

The ideal candidate is a mechanically and technically skilled automotive professional who enjoys hands-on work and is comfortable troubleshooting problems in a testing environment. Candidates with backgrounds as automotive technicians, test technicians, automotive engineering technicians, vehicle development technicians, instrumentation technicians, or highly skilled automotive mechanics may be a strong fit.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to work directly with prototype vehicles and contribute to real-world automotive development and testing.
