Transportation Systems/Technology Leader | Richmond | Virginia Beach | Williamsburg | Tysons, VA | Washington D.C.

Are you ready to lead the future of smart mobility? VHB is seeking a dynamic and experienced Transportation Systems/Technology Leader to drive innovation and excellence in our growing Transportation Technology Group across the Mid-Atlantic Region. This hands-on leadership role focuses on the planning, design, and construction support of cutting-edge ITS infrastructure-power and communications systems that are transforming how we move through our communities.

We're looking for a collaborative leader who brings deep technical knowledge, strategic vision, and a passion for smart, connected transportation systems. Based in either our Virginia or DC office locations. This position supports a hybrid work model that empowers employees to balance in-office collaboration with remote flexibility-wherever your creativity and productivity thrive.

Responsibilities:

    Provides project oversight on key ITS/ATMS/Technology projects to help ensure clear scoping and financially viable deliverables in the short and long term.
  • Work within a team of professionals to develop design plans and specifications for a variety of ITS, ATMS, and/or communications equipment & infrastructure
  • Oversees development of Systems Engineering documents for transportation technology projects following the FHWA Systems Engineering Process
  • Planning and development for ITS and ATMS systems including preparing master planning and policy documents
  • Oversee staff completion of other tasks such as engineering field work (field equipment testing, utility and infrastructure verification)
  • Writing technical reports and memoranda
  • Writing and updating specifications for ITS/ATMS hardware and/or software to keep current with trends in transportation technology
  • Oversee electrical design and analysis documents
  • Provide technical knowledge ITS/ATMS that ranges from planning, design, implementation, and operations of roadside infrastructure.
  • Has an awareness of latest technology systems and their effectiveness in providing improvements related to Transportation Maintenance, Operations and Safety
  • Assist marketing in development of VHB's external visibility, branding and promotional efforts related to Transportation Technology in local markets. In addition, represent VHB at conferences, seminars, industry events and provide technical presentations.
  • Serve as Project Management on major strategic pursuits. Leads go / no-go decisions supporting the local Regional Manager (RM) and Managing Director (MD) related to complex ITS/ATMS/Technology pursuits.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Systems Engineering
  • 11+ years of relevant professional experience in the ITS/ATMS market and managing teams
  • PE license required
  • Demonstrated previous experience in developing the strategic framework necessary for implementing a sustainable practice in the transportation technology sector
  • Strong collaboration skills and willingness to travel
  • Understands local agency initiatives related to technology and can assist in positioning VHB to support

The base salary range for this position is $135,000 to $215,000 for Virginia and DC offices. This offer is determined based on a number of job-related factors including internal comparators, skills, education, training, credentials, experience, scope and complexity of role responsibilities and geographic location.
