What are dynamic drilling jobs?

Dynamic drilling jobs involve managing and operating advanced drilling techniques and equipment used in oil and gas exploration and extraction. Professionals in this field are responsible for adapting to changing geological conditions, optimizing drilling parameters, and ensuring safety and efficiency throughout the drilling process. Dynamic drilling often uses real-time data and technologies to adjust operations on the fly, minimizing risks and improving productivity. These roles are critical for successful drilling operations in challenging environments, such as deepwater or unconventional reservoirs.

What are some common challenges faced in a Dynamic Drilling role, and how are they typically addressed on the job?

Professionals in Dynamic Drilling often encounter challenges such as rapidly changing subsurface conditions, equipment reliability issues, and the need for real-time decision-making. To address these, teams rely on advanced monitoring technologies, frequent communication with geologists and engineers, and adherence to strict safety protocols. Collaboration and quick problem-solving are essential, as is ongoing training to stay updated with the latest drilling techniques and equipment advancements. Support from multidisciplinary teams helps ensure well integrity and operational efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Dynamic Drilling Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Dynamic Drilling Engineer, you need a solid background in petroleum engineering or a related field, with expertise in drilling operations and well control principles. Familiarity with technical tools like drilling simulation software (e.g., Landmark or Schlumberger), real-time monitoring systems, and relevant certifications such as IWCF or IADC Well Control are typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work under pressure help professionals excel in fast-paced and high-stakes environments. These skills are critical to ensure safe, efficient drilling operations and successful project outcomes in the oil and gas industry.

What is the difference between Dynamic Drilling vs Horizontal Drilling?

Dynamic Drilling involves real-time adjustments to drilling parameters to optimize wellbore placement, while Horizontal Drilling focuses on extending the well horizontally to access reservoirs. Both roles require similar certifications and are used extensively in the oil and gas industry. The main difference lies in their specific techniques and applications, with Dynamic Drilling emphasizing adaptive control and Horizontal Drilling emphasizing lateral wellbore extension.

Job description

Infinity Natural Resources (NYSE: INR), is an oil and gas exploration and production company deeply rooted in the Appalachian Basin. Headquartered in Morgantown, WV, we are committed to responsible energy development, operational excellence, and strong environmental stewardship across our growing operations in Ohio and Pennsylvania. We pride ourselves on a collaborative work environment, a team dedicated to innovation and safety, and our strong connection to the Appalachian Basin, the region we proudly call home and operate within.
The Opportunity
We are seeking a high-caliber Drilling Engineer I to join our engineering team. This position offers an exceptional opportunity for an early-career professional to take ownership of vital technical designs and directly impact asset development. Positioned at the intersection of rigorous engineering and field execution, you will play a key role in driving operational efficiencies, managing costs, and implementing advanced technologies.
If you are a data-driven engineer with a strong professional foundation, excellent problem-solving skills under pressure, and a commitment to safety and compliance, this role offers the perfect platform to expand your technical expertise and elevate your career within the oil and gas industry.
Location
This is a hybrid position based out of our Morgantown, West Virginia office. You will be expected to work in the office three days a week. Additionally, this role requires a significant, hands-on presence where the action happens. Candidates must be able and willing to travel to field sites up to 25 โ€“ 40% of the time to maintain a consistent field presence, provide on-call support for field operations, and bridge the gap between corporate engineering design and rig-site execution.
What You Will Be Doing
As a Drilling Engineer, you will support design work, optimize performance metrics, and provide critical support to both corporate planning and field operations:
  • Develop comprehensive drilling programs and procedures. Perform technical well design, including casing and tubing specifications, ensuring equipment and materials meet all company and regulatory standards.
  • Analyze drilling metrics, interpret well logs, directional surveys, and geological data. Conduct offset pad and well research to benchmark peer technologies and identify process improvements.
  • Monitor live drilling performance, maintain a consistent presence in the field, and provide direct technical support to the rig site to resolve operational challenges.
  • Monitor and ensure the accurate tracking of field estimates versus planned expenditures to maintain project budget integrity.
  • Participate in vendor evaluations to ensure third-party service quality meets company benchmarks. Support and champion safety, environmental compliance, and regulatory frameworks.
  • Maintain precise records, provide on-call support for field operations, and collaborate seamlessly across teams to adapt to shifting operational priorities.

Your Background:
To excel in this role, you should bring a solid technical foundation, strong communication skills, and the flexibility required for dynamic field operations:
  • Bachelorโ€™s Degree in Petroleum Engineering is required.
  • 1โ€“3 years of professional experience within the oil and gas industry.
  • Strong knowledge of drilling engineering principles, well design practices, and industry regulatory frameworks.
  • Proficiency in data analytics with the ability to translate technical data into optimized operational solutions.
  • Proven ability to interpret well logs, directional surveys, and geological data.
  • Excellent problem-solving and decision-making skills, with the professional composure to handle high-pressure environments and changing priorities.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills to effectively collaborate with internal stakeholders and external service contractors.

Working Conditions & Physical Requirements
  • Schedule: Work may require extended hours, nights, or weekends during critical operations, including providing scheduled on-call support for field operations.
  • Physical Demands: Ability to perform light work (exerting up to 20 pounds of force occasionally). Position requires standard manual dexterity and visual acuity to operate office, computer, and field safety equipment, alongside the physical ability to stand, walk, crouch, or stoop at field sites.

Infinity Natural Resources is an equal opportunity employer.
