How much do duct sealing jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for duct sealing in the United States is $16.78, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $13.46 and $17.31 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is duct sealing and why is it important?

Duct sealing is the process of closing and reinforcing the joints and seams in heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) ductwork to prevent air leaks. Proper duct sealing improves energy efficiency, enhances indoor air quality, and ensures that heated or cooled air reaches its intended destination. Leaky ducts can lead to higher utility bills, uneven temperature distribution, and increased wear on HVAC systems. By sealing ducts, homeowners can save money and improve the comfort of their living spaces.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Duct Sealing Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Duct Sealing Technician, you need practical skills in HVAC systems, basic mechanical aptitude, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with tools such as mastic sealants, foil tape, smoke pencils, and sometimes diagnostic equipment like pressure gauges is typical, and certifications like EPA Section 608 can be beneficial. Attention to detail, problem-solving, and effective communication with clients make someone stand out in this role. These skills ensure duct systems are sealed efficiently, improving energy efficiency, indoor air quality, and customer satisfaction.

What is the difference between Duct Sealing vs HVAC Technician?

AspectDuct SealingHVAC Technician
CertificationsHVAC certifications, duct sealing-specific trainingHVAC certifications, broader technical training
Work EnvironmentResidential and commercial duct systemsHeating, cooling, ventilation systems in various settings
Job FocusSealing and insulating ductwork to improve efficiencyInstalling, repairing, maintaining HVAC systems

While duct sealing specialists focus specifically on sealing and insulating ductwork to enhance energy efficiency, HVAC technicians have a broader role that includes installing, repairing, and maintaining entire heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems. Both roles require similar certifications and often work in residential and commercial environments, but their primary responsibilities differ.

What are some common challenges faced by duct sealing technicians, and how can they be addressed on the job?

Duct sealing technicians often encounter challenges such as accessing hard-to-reach ductwork, working in confined or poorly ventilated spaces, and identifying hidden leaks. To address these issues, technicians use specialized tools like smoke pencils, pressure gauges, and flexible sealant applicators. Effective communication with HVAC installers and building occupants is also essential to coordinate access and ensure minimal disruption. Adhering to safety protocols and staying updated on the latest sealing techniques can help technicians overcome these challenges and ensure high-quality results.
