Duckdb information

What is DuckDB?

DuckDB is an in-process SQL OLAP (Online Analytical Processing) database management system designed for fast analytical data processing. Unlike traditional client-server databases, DuckDB runs directly within your application and works well with data science tools and workflows. It is lightweight, easy to install, and supports SQL queries on data stored in CSV, Parquet, and other formats, making it popular for data analysis and research use cases.

Is DuckDB a real database?

DuckDB is a real open-source database management system designed for analytical queries and data processing. It is often used by data analysts and developers for embedded analytics and supports SQL for data manipulation. As a lightweight, serverless database, it can be integrated into various environments for efficient data analysis.

What language does DuckDB use?

DuckDB is primarily written in C++ and provides APIs for languages such as Python, R, and Java, allowing integration with various data analysis tools. Developers working with DuckDB should be familiar with SQL for querying and may also use the supported programming languages for embedding and automation.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working with DuckDB in data engineering roles?

Professionals using DuckDB in data engineering often encounter challenges such as optimizing query performance for large-scale datasets, integrating DuckDB with existing data pipelines, and ensuring compatibility with various data formats and sources. Additionally, since DuckDB is relatively new compared to other database systems, users may find limited community support or resources for advanced use cases. Collaborating with data scientists and analysts is key, as DuckDB is often used for interactive analytics, requiring close communication to tailor solutions that meet both performance and usability needs.

What is the difference between Duckdb vs Data Analyst?

AspectDuckdbData Analyst
Primary RoleEmbedded analytical database engine for data processingInterprets data, creates reports, and provides insights

Work EnvironmentDevelopers, data engineers, embedded systemsBusiness environments, analytics teams, offices
CertificationsNone specific, SQL knowledge preferredCertified Data Analyst, SQL certifications

Duckdb is a database engine used mainly by developers and data engineers for embedded data processing, while Data Analysts focus on interpreting data and generating insights. Both roles require SQL skills, but their work environments and objectives differ significantly.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a DuckDB Developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a DuckDB Developer, you need strong SQL proficiency, a background in database management, and experience with analytical data processing, ideally supported by a degree in computer science or a related field. Familiarity with DuckDB, data integration tools, and programming languages such as Python or R is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills ensure efficient data analysis, seamless database integration, and the ability to convey insights to technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Is DuckDB paid?

DuckDB is an open-source database management system that is free to use and distribute. There are no costs associated with downloading or deploying DuckDB, making it accessible for individual and commercial projects without licensing fees.

What can I do with DuckDB?

DuckDB is an embedded analytical database engine often used by data analysts and developers for running complex queries on large datasets locally or within applications. It supports SQL and integrates with programming languages like Python and R, enabling data analysis, data transformation, and reporting tasks efficiently. Job description

About the Role

Join the platform team at a well-funded, early-stage AI data analytics startup building an agentic data lakehouse that delivers trustworthy answers from messy enterprise data at scale. As a Senior Software Engineer, Platform, you'll shape the data foundation that powers AI-driven analytics — no heavy schema migrations or data movement required. This is a high-ownership, zero-to-one role on a small, high-caliber team.

What You'll Do
  • Agentic Semantic Layer: Build the system that gives AI agents the context to query enterprise data correctly and the guardrails to prove their results — raising the bar for trustworthy, AI-generated analytics.

  • Distributed Agent Orchestration: Design and implement orchestration systems for agents interacting with the broader world — covering API integrations, rate limiting, OAuth passthrough, model routing, scheduling, and token optimization.

  • Agentic Data Engineering: Architect AI-centric ETL pipelines for data lakehouses that make large-scale analytics accessible to organizations with minimal data engineering resources.

  • Contribute across infrastructure, services, or frontend as the team and product evolve.

What We're Looking For

Required

  • 4+ years of hands-on experience as a backend or platform engineer building scalable distributed systems.

  • Proficiency in Golang — this is a hard requirement.

  • Experience with gRPC / ConnectRPC, Trino, Kubernetes, DuckDB, and PostgreSQL in a distributed data platform environment.

  • Strong CS fundamentals; Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or comparable practical experience.

  • Background at early-stage, VC-backed startups or demonstrated experience building products from zero to one.

  • Experience with data visualization tools, data engineering, data modeling, and big data technologies.

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with semantic layers, ontologies, or metadata management in enterprise data environments.

  • Experience with AI/ML infrastructure or LLM orchestration patterns.

  • Comfort owning work across infrastructure, services, or frontend as needed.

Compensation & Benefits
  • Salary: $200,000 – $350,000 USD annually

  • Visa sponsorship is available

Location

This role is on-site in New York City, NY (Financial District). Candidates must be willing and able to work in-office full-time. Remote or fully-distributed arrangements are not available for this position.
