The Route Manager is responsible for overseeing and supporting the company’s Route Sales Drivers and Shuttle Driver while ensuring routes operate efficiently, customers are properly serviced, and company freezer equipment is delivered, maintained, and properly positioned. The position monitors sales performance, route activity, customer service, and equipment needs while holding route personnel accountable for company standards.

The Route Manager is a hands-on leader

who manages drivers, addresses customer and equipment issues, reviews performance reports, and works with management and warehouse personnel to maintain efficient operations.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities Route & Driver Management
  • Supervise, direct, and support Route Sales Drivers and the Shuttle Driver.
  • Ensure drivers follow assigned routes, schedules, company policies, and safety procedures.
  • Monitor driver performance, attendance, customer service, and route responsibilities.
  • Coach and hold drivers accountable for performance and service standards.
  • Review sales and route reports to monitor volume, identify sales opportunities, and address skipped stops or underperforming routes.
  • Coordinate shuttle transportation of products and equipment between company locations and customer accounts.
  • Fill in for drivers when necessary, so that routes do not go without service.
Freezer & Equipment Management
  • Coordinate delivery and placement of company freezers for new customer accounts.
  • Ensure new accounts are properly equipped and stocked with ice cream.
  • Coordinate freezer swaps due to equipment failures, customer requests, or operational needs when replacement equipment is available.
  • Coordinate the removal, replacement, and relocation of freezers as necessary.
  • Maintain accurate records of freezer locations and equipment assigned to customers.
  • Inspect equipment as needed and coordinate repairs or replacements with management and warehouse personnel.
  • Ensure freezers are clean, operational, presentable, and properly positioned at customer locations.
Customer Service & Operations
  • Respond to customer concerns involving products, deliveries, freezers, and service.
  • Work with drivers to resolve customer issues and maintain strong customer relationships.
  • Communicate significant route, sales, customer, vehicle, or equipment issues to management.
  • Assist with route coverage, customer visits, equipment delivery, and other operational needs as necessary.
Safety & Compliance
  • Ensure drivers comply with company safety policies, DOT requirements, and driving standards.
  • Ensure company vehicles and equipment are operated safely and properly maintained.
  • Report accidents, safety concerns, vehicle issues, and other incidents promptly.
  • Maintain required driver and safety documentation.
Required Qualifications
  • Valid Class B CDL required.
  • Clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) required.
  • Current DOT Medical Card required.
  • Must successfully pass a DOT-required drug screen.
  • High School Diploma.
  • Previous experience supervising drivers, route personnel, delivery operations, or sales personnel preferred.
  • Strong leadership, communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to read and understand sales and operational reports.
  • Ability to manage multiple drivers, routes, customers, and equipment needs.
  • Must be dependable, professional, and able to hold employees accountable.
  • Ability to safely lift up to 50 pounds repetitively, move, and assist with freezer equipment and ice cream products as required.
  • Must be willing and able to travel between customer locations and company facilities.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience in route sales, DSD distribution, food service, convenience store, or wholesale distribution.
  • Previous CDL driving experience.
  • Experience managing sales routes or delivery personnel.
  • Experience with freezer/equipment placement and customer account service.
Physical Requirements

This position requires regular driving, customer visits, route oversight, and lifting, carrying, pushing, and pulling of ice cream products and freezer equipment. The employee must be able to work in refrigerated and freezer environments and safely perform equipment delivery and relocation duties.

Work Environment

This is a field-based management position involving regular interaction with Route Sales Drivers, the Shuttle Driver, customers, warehouse personnel, and management. The position includes office and reporting duties, driving, customer visits, route inspections, and hands-on equipment and operational responsibilities.
