What is drywall texture?

Drywall texture refers to the decorative patterns or finishes applied to the surface of drywall after it has been installed and taped. The texture can be applied using a variety of techniques and tools, such as brushes, rollers, or spray guns, to create different looks like knockdown, orange peel, or popcorn. These textures help hide imperfections, add visual interest, and can improve a room’s acoustics. The choice of texture often depends on personal preference and the style of the space.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals in drywall texture application, and how can they be overcome?

Drywall texture professionals often encounter challenges such as achieving consistent texture across large surfaces, working with different types of materials, and ensuring repairs blend seamlessly with existing textures. Overcoming these challenges typically involves honing application techniques, using the right tools for each texture style, and maintaining clear communication with clients and team members. Continuous practice and attention to detail are essential for producing high-quality, uniform finishes, and many professionals find it helpful to stay updated on new products and methods in the industry.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a drywall texture specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Drywall Texture Specialist, you need expertise in drywall installation, taping, mudding, and various texturing techniques, often gained through on-the-job experience or vocational training. Familiarity with tools such as trowels, sprayers, sanders, and knowledge of safety procedures and materials is essential. Attention to detail, reliability, and effective communication are important soft skills for delivering high-quality finishes and collaborating with clients or team members. These skills and qualities ensure durable, aesthetically pleasing results and client satisfaction in construction and renovation projects.

About Us

McLeod Construction is a well-established general contractor serving the Puget Sound region. We specialize in multifamily, commercial, insurance restoration, and residential repair projects, delivering exceptional craftsmanship and outstanding customer service.

We're looking for an experienced Drywall Repair & Restoration Technician who takes pride in producing seamless repairs that look like the damage never happened. If you're the type of craftsman who enjoys matching textures, creating invisible patches, and delivering a clean finished product, we'd love to meet you.

Most of our work involves repairing water-damaged homes, condominiums, and multifamily properties after mitigation has been completed. While you'll occasionally perform light finish carpentry and other interior repairs, drywall patching, finishing, and texture matching will be the primary focus of this position.

Employment Eligibility (E-Verify)

McLeod Construction participates in the federal E-Verify program. After accepting a conditional offer of employment, all new hires will complete the Form I-9 Employment Eligibility Verification process. Employment eligibility will then be confirmed through the federal E-Verify program, as required by law.

What You'll Do

  • Repair drywall damaged by water, plumbing leaks, and other property losses.
  • Perform flood-cut repairs from start to finish.
  • Patch drywall ranging from small repairs to large wall and ceiling replacements.
  • Tape, mud, sand, finish, and prepare surfaces for paint.
  • Match existing wall and ceiling textures, including orange peel, knockdown, hand texture, and smooth wall finishes.
  • Blend repairs so they are virtually undetectable.
  • Complete ceiling repairs, drywall replacement, and texture repairs.
  • Prime repaired areas and prepare surfaces for painting.
  • Perform light finish carpentry including baseboards, casing, trim, and minor repairs when needed.
  • Complete occasional flooring or miscellaneous repair work as project needs require.
  • Maintain clean, organized work areas, especially in occupied homes and condominiums.
  • Communicate professionally with homeowners, property managers, and project managers.
  • Document work using company tablets and smartphones.
  • Work independently while maintaining McLeod's standards for quality, safety, and customer service.

What You Bring

3+ years of professional drywall repair and finishing experience.

  • Expert drywall patching, taping, mudding, sanding, and finishing skills.
  • Experience repairing water-damaged drywall and flood-cut repairs.
  • Ability to match existing wall and ceiling textures so repairs are difficult to detect.
  • Experience with texture application equipment and texture blending.
  • Strong attention to detail and pride in producing high-quality finished work.
  • Ability to work independently and solve problems in the field.
  • Professional customer service and communication skills.
  • Comfortable working inside occupied homes and multifamily buildings.
  • Comfortable using smartphones, tablets, digital work orders, and photo documentation.
  • Reliable transportation and ability to travel throughout the Puget Sound region.
  • Ability to lift up to 75 lbs., climb ladders, kneel, bend, and work overhead.

Preferred Experience

  • Experience performing multiple residential trades, including:
  • Finish carpentry experience.
  • Interior painting.
  • Cabinet adjustments or repairs.
  • LVP, vinyl, or flooring repairs.
  • Water damage restoration experience.
  • Insurance restoration experience.
  • OSHA safety knowledge.

Tools & Equipment

Candidates must have the professional tools necessary to perform the work, including:

  • Air compressor
  • Texture gun
  • Drywall finishing tools
  • Mud pans and knives
  • Hawk and trowels
  • Pole sander and power sander
  • Drill and impact driver
  • Multi-tool
  • Ladders
  • Standard hand tools

Additional Requirements

  • A conditional offer of employment is contingent upon successfully completing a background check and pre-employment drug screening, where applicable.
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.
  • Employment eligibility will be verified through the federal E-Verify program after hire.
  • Valid driver's license preferred.

What We Offer

  • Competitive hourly wage - $29 - $35 per hour DOE
  • Paid Holidays - 8 days per year
  • Paid Time Off (this includes sick and vacation) - up to 7 days per year.
  • Full Health Insurance - Medical, dental, vision with additional voluntary coverage.
  • 401(k) with company match (eligible after six months).
  • Employee ownership through our ESOP program
  • Annual evaluations and opportunities for career growth.

If you're a dependable, skilled craftsman who takes pride in doing the job right and providing a quality finished product, we'd love to hear from you.
