Job description

The Department of Radiation Oncology of the University of MarylandSchool of Medicine, ranked top 5th in NIH research funding, isrecruiting for a Radiation Oncologist at theAssistant/Associate/Professor level. The department providesRadiation Oncology services at several practice settings and has aneed for a full-time faculty physician scientist. The idealcandidate will have a track record of continuous and/or renewal ofextramural/industry funding and have an active clinical practice.Based on the candidate's experience, the opportunity to hold a departmental leadership position, such as Vice-Chair, could be made available.

This faculty position will provide strategic vision for ourdepartment's research/clinical trial efforts endeavors. Theseinclude an opportunity with our Division of Translational RadiationSciences [DTRS], with a distinguished history of achievement andgrant/contract funding in cellular responses to DNA damage,development of original preclinical models of radiation effects onnormal tissue, and medical countermeasures research; and thecollaborative translational efforts of our large Medical Physicsteam, noted for introduction of innovative technologies andstandard setting in quality assurance measures. An equalopportunity exists in leading our collaborative and rapidlydeveloping theranostics program as a clinical trialist. Theposition will also work closely with our nationally recognizedclinical research team and participate in providing patient care atthe Maryland Proton Treatment Center.

The Department of Radiation Oncology's clinical program has twenty(20) physicians. The main patient care facility is at theUniversity of Maryland Medical Center in downtown Baltimore, withinthe University of Maryland Greenebaum Comprehensive Cancer Center,and is close to the main attractions of the Inner Harbor waterfrontand professional sports stadiums. We provide patient care in eight(8) locations in Maryland; the University of Maryland MedicalCenter (UMMC) and the Maryland Proton Treatment Center (MPTC) indowntown Baltimore, the Central Maryland Radiation Oncology Center(CMROC) in Columbia, the Tate Cancer Center at the University ofMaryland Baltimore Washington Medical Center (UM-BWMC) in GlenBurnie, the Kaufman Cancer Center at University of Maryland UpperChesapeake Medical Center in Bel Air, MD (UM-UCMC), the RequardRadiation Oncology Center at the University of Maryland ShoreMedical Center (UM-SRMC) in Easton, MD, the Radiation OncologyCenter at the University of Maryland St Joseph Medical Center(UM-SJMC) in Towson, and the Center for Advanced Medicine at theUniversity of Maryland Capital Region Medical Center (UMโ€“CRMC) inUpper Marlboro, MD. There is a prospect that we may offerprofessional services in other locations in the future. Our currentclinical program has fourteen (14) linear accelerators, a researchlinear accelerator, eight (8) multi-slice large bore CT simulators,a proton center with four (4) active treatment rooms, GammaPod,five (5) HDR units, an MRI and active programs in HyperthermiaTherapy, Brachytherapy, SRS/SBRT, radiopharmaceuticals andRadio-embolization. There are several campus-wide shared resourcesincluding small-animal imaging CT, PET and MR scanners. There aretwelve (12) medical residents and three (3) medical physicsresidents.

Medical Physics led by Dr. Amit Sawant, has thirty three (33)medical physics faculty, twenty six (26) dosimetrists, three (3)physics residents, post-doctoral fellows, graduate students, andsix (6) information systems and technology staff. All practicesites are connected via a state-of-the-art telemedicine networkfacilitating interactions between faculty and staff. Researchprograms include the development of new treatment planning anddelivery techniques, tumor motion management, inter-fraction imageguidance strategies, two SARRPs and research vaults dedicated tophoton and proton related research. The division of medical physicshas research space co-located with DTRS. The department occupies>20,000 sq. ft. of purpose-built, fully renovated,access-controlled wet laboratory, animal research and dry lab spacefor successful execution of translational radiobiological/physicsresearch.

Salary Range. Min; $287,100 Max; $622,000

The referenced salary range reflects base pay, which is based onfaculty rank and years in rank. This salary range does not includeall components of the Radiation Oncology faculty compensationprogram or pay from participation in Radiation Oncology variablecompensation programs. The referenced salary range represents the minimum and maximumsalaries for this position and is based on the University ofMaryland School of Medicine's good faith belief at the time ofposting. Not all candidates will be eligible for the upper end ofthe salary range. The actual compensation offered to the selectedcandidate may vary and will ultimately depend on multiple factors,which may include the successful candidate's geographic location,skills, work experience, internal equity, market conditions,education/training and other factors, as reasonably determined bythe University.
