Drupal Design information

How does a Drupal Designer typically collaborate with developers and content teams during a website project?

Drupal Designers often work closely with both developers and content teams to ensure a seamless user experience and technical feasibility. During a project, designers will create wireframes and prototypes, gather feedback from stakeholders, and adjust designs based on input from developers regarding module capabilities or theme constraints. They also coordinate with content managers to ensure the design supports content strategy and accessibility standards. Regular communication and collaborative tools, such as project management platforms and design systems, help maintain alignment throughout the project lifecycle.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Drupal Designer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Drupal Designer, you need expertise in front-end web design, a solid understanding of the Drupal CMS, and a background in user experience (UX) and user interface (UI) principles. Familiarity with tools like Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, HTML/CSS, and Drupal theming modules is essential, along with knowledge of current web standards. Strong communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills help you work effectively with developers and stakeholders. These abilities are critical to creating visually appealing, user-friendly, and functional websites that leverage Drupal’s full potential.

What is Drupal design?

Drupal design refers to the process of creating and implementing the visual and user experience aspects of websites built on the Drupal content management system (CMS). This involves designing themes, layouts, user interfaces, and ensuring that the site is both aesthetically pleasing and easy to navigate. Drupal designers often collaborate with developers to customize site appearance and functionality, utilizing Drupal's powerful theming system. Their goal is to deliver a website that not only looks great but also aligns with the client’s branding and usability needs.

Drupal Design specialists focus on creating and customizing themes within the Drupal CMS, requiring technical skills like PHP and theme development. Web Designers have a broader role in designing website layouts, visuals, and user interfaces, often emphasizing graphic design and user experience. While both roles involve web aesthetics, Drupal Design is more technical and CMS-specific, whereas Web Design covers a wider range of design tasks across platforms.

Job description

About San Francisco Bay University:

San Francisco Bay University (SFBU), a nonprofit, WASC-accredited university situated in the heart of Silicon Valley in Fremont, California, seeks an innovative and experienced Web Developer. SFBU's mission is to offer inclusive, innovative, and inspirational education for lifelong careers, and our vision is to set the standard as a national model of higher education in service of the common good.

At SFBU, students come first. We prioritize students' needs by fostering personal engagement among students, faculty, and staff. We are committed to providing affordable quality education with a deep commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and social justice.

We encourage you to learn more about SFBU by reviewing our strategic plan at https://www.sfbu.edu/strategic-plan.

Position Overview:

We are seeking an experienced Web Developer with a strong eye for design and a passion for creating beautiful, user-friendly websites. This role is primarily focused on maintaining and enhancing our main university website (www.sfbu.edu) and other digital assets. You will collaborate closely with our IT team and various departments to ensure our online presence is visually appealing and functionally robust, with an emphasis on graphic design and UI/UX over heavy programming. This is a full-time, non-exempt position that is eligible for a hybrid work schedule, with two days onsite and three days remote per week.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Website Maintenance & Enhancement:

Manage and update the main university website (www.sfbu.edu) and additional web properties.

Ensure websites are visually appealing, current, and aligned with the university's brand standards.

  • Design & User Experience:

Develop and refine website layouts that prioritize intuitive navigation and a seamless user experience.

Collaborate with internal stakeholders to translate design concepts into engaging web interfaces.

Emphasize responsive design to ensure optimal performance across all devices.

  • Content Management & Collaboration:

Utilize content management systems (e.g., WordPress) to update and manage website content.

Work with cross-department teams to understand and meet their digital needs.

Ensure web content remains accurate and consistent with university messaging.

  • Technical Implementation:

Apply coding tasks (HTML, CSS, and basic JavaScript) as needed to support design enhancements.

Troubleshoot and resolve front-end issues while maintaining design integrity and user experience.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Graphic Design, Web Development, Digital Media, or a related field.

  • A minimum of 2-3 years' experience in web development with an emphasis on design, UI/UX, or graphic design.

  • A portfolio demonstrating successful website design and maintenance projects.

  • Extensive experience with content management systems, preferably Drupal and WordPress.

  • Proficiency in Adobe Photoshop or other graphic design software (e.g., Illustrator, Sketch, or Figma).

  • Familiarity with responsive design principles and mobile-first development strategies.

  • Basic proficiency in HTML, CSS, and JavaScript.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 3-5 years of experience in web development or graphic design.

  • Experience maintaining high-traffic websites, particularly within an academic or institutional setting.

  • Proficiency in Drupal theme development.

  • Strong visual design skills with an exceptional eye for detail.

  • Ability to balance creative design with technical requirements to deliver an engaging user experience.

  • Understanding of SEO principles and experience in implementing SEO best practices.

  • Familiarity with accessibility standards (such as WCAG) and best practices in designing accessible digital experiences.

  • Project management skills, with an emphasis on delivering high-quality web solutions within specified timelines.

Salary: $45.00 - $65.00 per hour (DOE)
