Job description

Duties Description Maintenance Assistants perform a variety of semiskilled maintenance, repair, and related activities. Specific duties and job requirements will include, but not be limited to, the following: Under direct supervision, assists a skilled trade (electrical, plumbing, carpentry, masonry, etc.) worker in the maintenance, repair and rehabilitation of canal buildings, facilities and related equipment; Assists in installation, maintenance and repair of canal equipment; Assists in repair and replacement of plumbing equipment; Assists in the painting of boats, walls, ceiling, wood and metal trimmings and ornaments and; Operates tools and machinery and ensures equipment is in proper working condition. Minimum Qualifications Must have two years of full-time experience in maintenance or mechanical work under the supervision of a skilled tradesperson; OR completion of an appropriate two-year technical school course at a school, institute, or branch of the Armed Services, such as the New York State Civil Service Employees Association-Partnership (NYS CSEA-P) Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program*

Additional Requirements: Based on operational needs, candidates must possess a Class B driver's license with no Air Brake restrictions to operate a motor vehicle in NYS at the time of appointment & continuously thereafter or face possible administrative action up to and including termination. Candidates who possess a valid Class B driver's permit to operate a motor vehicle in NYS at the time of appointment will have up to five months from the date of appointment to obtain their Class B driver's license with Air Brake Endorsement or face possible administrative action up to and including termination. *Successful completion of the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Certificate Program includes a total of 288 hours of trade-specific classroom instruction, 45 hours of technical math course work, 45 hours of technical communications course work, and 15 hours of blueprint/schematic reading course work.

It does not include 4,000 hours of on-the-job training, as required for the NYS CSEA-P Applied Skilled Trades Traineeship. ***Please note that US Coast Guard or OTEDA Drug Testing is required for these positions.*** Prior to appointment, the candidate must successfully complete pre-employment drug screening appropriate to the duties and responsibilities assigned. External candidates who cannot successfully complete the drug testing requirements may not be offered employment and/or have their job offer rescinded

Internal candidates (current employees) who do not successfully complete the pre-employment drug testing requirements may be subject to administrative action up to and including termination. ** Please note that once appointed, this position is included in a random drug testing pool and therefore employees will be required to submit to random, periodic drug testing for the duration of their service in positions included in a random drug testing pool. ** Additional Comments The New York State Canal Corporation (Canals), a subsidiary of the New York Power Authority, is responsible for overseeing and maintaining the 524-mile waterway for boating, recreation, tourism and agriculture.
