CITY OF ELKHART - JOB DESCRIPTION
DEPARTMENT: Street Department
POSITION: Laborer-Mowing Crew
DIVISION: Street Department
STATUS : Seasonal-26 weeks
CATEGORY: Hourly, $20
FLSA: Non-Exempt
REPORTS TO: Street Department Supervisor and/or Mowing Crew Leader
JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of the Street Department Supervisor and/or Mowing Crew Leader, the Seasonal Laborer is responsible for mowing and general upkeep of city-owned lots and properties. This position plays an important role in maintaining the visual appearance and safety of public spaces throughout the City of Elkhart
PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Mow and trim grass on city-owned vacant lots and properties.
  • Perform routine maintenance and cleanup of assigned areas.
  • Operate various types of lawn care equipment and power tools.
  • Ensure safe and efficient completion of assigned work tasks. Perform other duties as assigned.

PERSONAL WORK TRAITS
  • Responsible and dependable.
  • Self-motivated with a strong work ethic.

OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Perform additional tasks and assignments as directed by supervisors and or crew leader.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Prior experience in groundskeeping or lawn maintenance preferred.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Ability to safely operate power tools and lawn care equipment.
  • Proficient in the use of zero-turn mowers, string trimmers, and leaf blowers.

PHYSICAL, MENTAL, AND VISUAL SKILLS
  • Must be able to lift, bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, and crawl as required to complete job duties.
  • Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs. and perform physical labor, including standing, walking, bending, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions, including high heat and rain.
  • Work is performed primarily outdoors and may involve exposure to extreme temperatures, humidity, dust, pollen, insects, and uneven terrain.

POST OFFER TESTING REQUIREMENTS
  • The City of Elkhart is a Drug Free Workplace. Therefore, successfully passing a post offer drug screen is required (random drug testing may be conducted after employment).
  • Background checks producing acceptable BMV and criminal history reports required.
