What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Drone Visual Observer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Drone Visual Observer, you need a solid understanding of FAA regulations, strong situational awareness, and usually a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with drone operations, radio communication systems, and sometimes completion of the FAA Part 107 certification are important technical requirements. Attention to detail, clear communication, and the ability to remain alert and focused for extended periods are crucial soft skills. These abilities are important to ensure safe drone operations by effectively identifying hazards and maintaining compliance with aviation regulations.

How does a Drone Visual Observer typically collaborate with the drone pilot during operations?

A Drone Visual Observer works closely with the drone pilot to ensure safe and compliant flight operations. The observer maintains continuous visual line-of-sight with the drone, monitoring for obstacles, air traffic, and any hazards that could affect the mission. Regular, clear communication between the observer and the pilot is essential, as the observer relays real-time information and alerts the pilot to any safety concerns. This teamwork is crucial for meeting regulatory requirements and ensuring the safety of people and property in the vicinity.

What are Drone Visual Observers?

Drone Visual Observers are individuals who assist drone pilots by maintaining visual contact with the drone during flight operations. Their primary responsibility is to monitor the drone for potential hazards, ensure it remains within legal line-of-sight requirements, and communicate any safety concerns to the pilot in real time. Visual Observers play a critical role in safe drone operations, especially during complex or beyond-visual-line-of-sight (BVLOS) missions. They help prevent collisions and ensure compliance with aviation regulations.

About Doodle Labs

Doodle Labs builds high-performance wireless communications for the drone and unmanned systems ecosystem enabling reliable, high-bandwidth connectivity across airborne and mobile robotic platforms operating in complex environments. We partner with leading drone OEMs, robotics companies, and defense organizations worldwide. Our mission is to make connectivity for autonomous machines as reliable and ubiquitous as the internet itself.

About the Role

The Creative Director / Design Lead owns Doodle Labs' visual identity and sets the creative standard across every customer-facing channel. This is a player-coach role: you define what Doodle Labs looks like, lead the creative process for campaigns and product launches, and you build the work yourself. You'll translate complex wireless technology into compelling visual communication and ensure that everything from a product datasheet to a trade show booth reflects a consistent, elevated brand.

What You'll Do

  • Own and evolve Doodle Labs' visual identity including brand guidelines, design systems, and the creative standards the team follows
  • Lead creative for campaigns, product launches, and go-to-market programs across digital, content, and events
  • Translate complex technical concepts into clear, compelling visual storytelling across all formats
  • Design website pages, landing pages, and digital assets that improve engagement and conversion
  • Produce high-quality collateral: datasheets, whitepapers, presentations, case studies, and technical illustrations
  • Manage and direct agency partners, freelancers, and external creative vendors as needed
  • Build scalable design workflows and templates that increase team output without sacrificing quality

    What Success Looks Like

    • A cohesive, recognizable Doodle Labs brand presence across all channels and materials
    • Design systems and templates that dramatically accelerate marketing content production
    • Campaigns and launches executed with creative that drives measurable engagement
    • Complex technology made accessible through strong, consistent visual communication

      Who You Are

      • 710+ years of design experience with a portfolio showing both craft and creative direction, not just execution
      • Proven ownership of visual identity or brand systems at a company or product level
      • Expert in translating complex B2B or technical content into compelling visuals
      • Direct experience producing common B2B marketing design materials including digital ads, ebooks/whitepapers, web pages and UI, and design systems for webinars, events and other content initiatives.
      • Proficient in Figma, Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, Photoshop, InDesign), and related tools
      • Experienced leading creative for campaigns and multi-channel marketing programs
      • Comfortable managing external creative partners and directing work at a senior level
      • Strong communicator who can articulate creative rationale to marketing, product, and executive stakeholders

        Preferred Qualifications

        • Background in B2B technology, hardware, defense, aerospace, or robotics
        • Technical illustration, product visualization, or system diagram experience
        • Motion graphics, video, or photography direction
        • Trade show, event, or physical brand environment design

        Why Join Doodle Labs

        • Own the creative identity of a category-defining technology company
        • Work on mission-critical technology used by the world's leading drone, robotics, and defense organizations
        • Real creative authority in a high-growth company that moves fast and values craft
        • Build a portfolio spanning brand, campaign, digital, and technical communication

          Compensation & Benefits

Doodle Labs offers competitive compensation and a comprehensive benefits package built for people doing serious work.

          • Competitive base salary, individual and company performance bonuses.
          • Medical, dental, and vision coverage. Plus One Medical, Teladoc, Talkspace, Health Advocate, Kindbody, and sponsored gym memberships.

          • Access to courses, certifications, and conferences.
          • Pre-tax commuter savings for transit and parking (US roles).
          • Paid time off, Federal and Bank holidays observed, plus a company-wide holiday shutdown from Christmas through New Year's.
          • Available depending on role eligibility.
