What is a driver helper?

Driver Helpers assist delivery drivers with loading, unloading, and delivering packages, especially during busy seasons. They typically ride along with the driver, help carry packages to customers' doors, and ensure deliveries are completed efficiently and safely. This role often requires physical stamina, good customer service skills, and the ability to work in various weather conditions. Driver Helpers do not drive the vehicle themselves but are essential in supporting timely deliveries.

What does a driver helper do?

As a driver helper, your duties are to help a delivery driver to load and unload their truck and accompany them on the route from the warehouse or shipping facility to customers. Your specific responsibilities also include helping to prepare and store equipment, such as hand trucks and dollies for moving large packages. Many driver helpers work for the large parcel delivery services, such as UPS, FedEx, and DHL, and they are often entry-level jobs where you get training before you can work as a delivery person yourself.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a driver helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Driver Helper, you need physical stamina, basic math skills, and the ability to safely handle and move packages, often requiring a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with handheld scanners, GPS devices, and delivery management systems is commonly expected. Strong communication, reliability, and teamwork are essential soft skills for supporting the driver and ensuring efficient deliveries. These skills are crucial for maintaining timely, accurate deliveries and upholding customer satisfaction in a fast-paced logistics environment.

What are some typical challenges faced by driver helpers during peak delivery seasons?

During peak delivery seasons, such as holidays, Driver Helpers often encounter increased package volumes and tight delivery schedules. This can mean longer hours, more physically demanding work, and the need to adapt quickly to changing routes or weather conditions. Effective communication with the driver and strong organizational skills are crucial to ensure timely and accurate deliveries. Staying positive and maintaining a team-oriented attitude help in managing the fast-paced environment.

The Driver Helper will work alongside our drivers to safely deliver sheetrock/drywall and other building materials to residential and commercial job sites. This is a physically demanding, hands-on position that requires regularly lifting and carrying sheets of drywall from the delivery truck into homes and buildings.

This position will also occasionally be responsible for driving a flatbed delivery truck, so candidates must be at least 21 years old, have a valid driver's license, and be comfortable operating company delivery vehicles as needed.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Assist drivers with loading, securing, transporting, and unloading sheetrock/drywall and other building materials.
  • Carry sheets of drywall from the delivery truck into homes, buildings, garages, and other designated areas at the job site.
  • Work with the driver and other team members to safely and efficiently complete deliveries.
  • Protect customer property and materials from damage during the delivery process.
  • Properly handle and stack drywall and other building materials to prevent damage.
  • Occasionally operate a flatbed delivery truck as needed.
  • Perform pre-trip and post-trip vehicle inspections when assigned to drive.
  • Follow all company safety procedures and applicable DOT and traffic regulations.
  • Maintain a clean and organized truck and work area.
  • Provide professional and courteous service to customers, contractors, and job-site personnel.
  • Assist with other warehouse, yard, or delivery duties as assigned.
Qualifications
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record required.
  • Ability and willingness to drive a flatbed delivery truck as needed.
  • Previous delivery, construction, warehouse, or building-material experience is preferred but not required.
  • Must be dependable, punctual, and able to work effectively as part of a team.
  • Ability to follow instructions and communicate effectively with drivers, coworkers, and customers.
  • Strong commitment to workplace and job-site safety.
Physical Requirements

This is a very physically demanding position. Candidates must be able to:

  • Regularly lift, carry, and maneuver full sheets of sheetrock/drywall.
  • Carry building materials into homes and buildings, including through doorways, hallways, and other confined spaces.
  • Perform repetitive lifting, carrying, bending, reaching, pushing, and pulling throughout the workday.
  • Work on uneven surfaces and active construction sites.
  • Work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
  • Safely perform physical work for extended periods.
What We're Looking For

We're looking for someone who isn't afraid of hard work and understands the importance of getting materials to our customers safely, efficiently, and in good condition. The right person will be reliable, safety-minded, willing to help wherever needed, and ready to be part of a team that keeps our customers and job sites moving.
