What is a driver helper?

Driver Helpers assist delivery drivers with loading, unloading, and delivering packages, especially during busy seasons. They typically ride along with the driver, help carry packages to customers' doors, and ensure deliveries are completed efficiently and safely. This role often requires physical stamina, good customer service skills, and the ability to work in various weather conditions. Driver Helpers do not drive the vehicle themselves but are essential in supporting timely deliveries.

What does a driver helper do?

As a driver helper, your duties are to help a delivery driver to load and unload their truck and accompany them on the route from the warehouse or shipping facility to customers. Your specific responsibilities also include helping to prepare and store equipment, such as hand trucks and dollies for moving large packages. Many driver helpers work for the large parcel delivery services, such as UPS, FedEx, and DHL, and they are often entry-level jobs where you get training before you can work as a delivery person yourself.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a driver helper, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Driver Helper, you need physical stamina, basic math skills, and the ability to safely handle and move packages, often requiring a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with handheld scanners, GPS devices, and delivery management systems is commonly expected. Strong communication, reliability, and teamwork are essential soft skills for supporting the driver and ensuring efficient deliveries. These skills are crucial for maintaining timely, accurate deliveries and upholding customer satisfaction in a fast-paced logistics environment.

What are some typical challenges faced by driver helpers during peak delivery seasons?

During peak delivery seasons, such as holidays, Driver Helpers often encounter increased package volumes and tight delivery schedules. This can mean longer hours, more physically demanding work, and the need to adapt quickly to changing routes or weather conditions. Effective communication with the driver and strong organizational skills are crucial to ensure timely and accurate deliveries. Staying positive and maintaining a team-oriented attitude help in managing the fast-paced environment.

As a Driver Helper, you travel on short-haul, single-driver routes and perform the physical unloading of snack cakes at delivery locations to maximize route flexibility and driver efficiency. You ride in the truck cab with the driver, assist with maneuvering trailers into position near warehouses, set up and take down unloading rollers, and help unload trailers by throwing cases from inside the trailer while the driver handles all product stacking in the warehouse. This seasonal role offers a strong entry point into the organization, with eligibility to apply for internal, long-term positions after the contract period.

Responsibilities

  • Ride along in the truck cab with the driver on short-haul routes, sometimes for up to 10 hours per day, to support safe and efficient deliveries.
  • Assist the driver in maneuvering trailers so they can park safely and efficiently near warehouses, acting as a spotter as needed.
  • Set up unloading rollers at delivery locations and take them down once unloading is complete to keep operations running smoothly.
  • Physically unload snack cakes from trailers by throwing cases from inside the trailer, while leaving all stacking and placement inside the warehouse to the driver.
  • Accurately and safely unload freight at various customer delivery locations in compliance with company standards and safety procedures.
  • Serve as a safety spotter while the driver maneuvers the vehicle, helping ensure the safety of people, equipment, and product.
  • Operate basic emergency safety devices such as fire extinguishers, flares, and warning triangles if needed, in accordance with safety protocols.
  • Assist with route paperwork by helping complete necessary trip documentation and maintaining accurate records as directed by the driver.
  • Help inspect the truck for defects, supporting pre-trip and post-trip checks to identify any issues that may affect safety or performance.
  • Verify each customer’s order at delivery, checking counts and product against documentation and listing any discrepancies on delivery receipts.
  • Maintain a clean and orderly truck cab throughout the shift, ensuring trash and debris are removed and surfaces are kept tidy.
  • Practice good personal hygiene and adhere to the driver uniform policy to present a professional appearance at all times.
  • Represent the company professionally with customers and the public by being respectful, cooperative, and courteous during all interactions.
  • Follow all safety guidelines related to lifting, carrying, and moving cases, including frequent and repetitive lifting of 25–35 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 50 pounds.
  • Maintain a flexible schedule, responding to dispatch notifications with 10–24 hours’ notice and working 10–14 hour days as required by route needs.

Essential Skills

  • Valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to read and write to understand work instructions, delivery documents, and safety information.
  • Ability to work with numbers to verify inventory, counts, and delivery quantities accurately.
  • Effective verbal communication skills to relay job information and coordinate with the driver, customers, and team members.
  • Willingness to travel in the truck for extended periods and maintain a highly flexible schedule, including varying shifts and start times.
  • Ability to frequently and repetitively lift and move 25–35 pounds and occasionally lift and move up to 50 pounds.
  • Capability to perform heavy physical work safely and consistently throughout 10–14 hour shifts.
  • Successful completion of a Post-Offer Employment Test (POET) to confirm ability to safely meet the role’s physical demands.
  • Experience or ability in unloading trucks and handling freight safely and efficiently.
  • Basic familiarity with inventory control practices such as checking orders and documenting discrepancies.
  • Ability to follow safety procedures and operate basic emergency safety equipment such as fire extinguishers, flares, and warning triangles.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience with unloading trucks, loading trucks, and general freight handling.
  • Experience in inventory tasks such as verifying orders and recording discrepancies.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced, physically demanding environment involving repetitive lifting and movement.
  • Strong attention to detail when checking delivery paperwork and product counts.
  • Reliability and punctuality, with the ability to respond to dispatch notices with 10–24 hours’ notice.
  • Professional demeanor when interacting with customers and the public.
  • Ability to maintain a clean work area, including the truck cab, and follow cleanliness standards.
  • Comfort working on different shifts, including early mornings, evenings, and overnights.
  • Willingness to adhere to a driver uniform policy and maintain a neat, professional appearance.

Why Work Here?

This role offers a clear pathway into a well-structured organization, giving you a strong foothold in the logistics and transportation field. You gain hands-on experience in route operations and freight handling while working alongside professional drivers. The position provides a defined three-month contract with the opportunity to apply for internal, long-term roles after completion, supporting career growth and stability. You benefit from shift differentials for second and third shifts and a tiered completion bonus for finishing the full assignment, rewarding your commitment and reliability. The schedule includes guaranteed time off from Friday an hour before sundown to Saturday an hour after sundown, supporting work-life balance and personal commitments.

Work Environment

This is a transportation and ride-along environment where you work primarily in and around delivery trucks and warehouses. You ride in the truck cab with the driver, often on short-haul routes that can last up to 10 hours per day, and you spend significant time inside trailers unloading cases of snack cakes. Shifts typically run 10–14 hours, and you must be flexible with workdays and dispatch times, receiving 10–24 hours’ notice before start times.
