Job description

At Legal Aid of Nebraska, every case has the power to change a life. As Nebraska's largest nonprofit law firm, our mission is to ensure that everyone, regardless of income, has access to justice. We provide free civil legal services to individuals and families facing some of life's most difficult challenges while empowering communities through education and advocacy.
We're seeking a compassionate, driven Staff Attorney to join our North Platte office. This is an opportunity to build meaningful client relationships, develop a diverse legal practice, and make a lasting impact in western Nebraska.
Whether you're an experienced attorney looking for purpose-driven work or a newer attorney eager to gain courtroom experience and mentorship, we'd love to hear from you. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates!
What You'll Do
As a Staff Attorney, you'll provide direct legal representation to eligible clients in a variety of civil legal matters while serving as a trusted advocate for vulnerable Nebraskans.
Responsibilities include:
  • Evaluating potential cases and determining appropriate representation.
  • Conducting legal research and factual investigations.
  • Drafting pleadings, motions, correspondence, and other legal documents.
  • Negotiating settlements and representing clients in hearings, litigation, and appeals as appropriate.
  • Counseling clients on their legal rights, options, and next steps.
  • Collaborating with community partners and participating in outreach and legal education initiatives.
  • Staying current on developments in areas of law affecting Legal Aid clients.

Every day offers meaningful work, professional growth, and the opportunity to create positive change in your community.
Why Legal Aid?
When you join Legal Aid of Nebraska, you become part of a collaborative team dedicated to equal justice and public service.
We offer:
  • 15 paid holidays
  • Generous vacation and sick leave
  • Health, dental, and vision insurance
  • Employer-paid life and AD&D insurance
  • Long-term disability coverage
  • Paid FMLA benefits
  • Employee Assistance Program
  • Retirement plan
  • Wellness benefit
  • Gym/health club reimbursement
  • Relocation assistance for qualified candidates

Why North Platte?
  • Affordable cost of living and short commute times
  • Access to outdoor recreation, hunting, fishing, hiking, and lakes
  • Family-friendly community with excellent quality of life
  • Opportunity to become a visible leader in the local legal community
  • Meaningful work where your impact is seen every day
What We're Looking For
Successful candidates will have:
  • Strong legal research, writing, litigation, and communication skills.
  • A commitment to serving low-income and underserved communities.
  • The ability to manage cases independently while working collaboratively with colleagues.
  • A passion for advancing access to justice.

Requirements
  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Licensed to practice law in Nebraska, or licensed in another state with a pending Nebraska admission or waiver application.
  • Experience in legal aid, public interest law, poverty law, or community-based legal services is highly valued.
  • Bilingual or multilingual applicants are encouraged to apply.
