Job description

ROLE AND RESPONSIBILITIES

This position is accountable for providing welding, flame cutting, and other associated tasks as required to repair the dredge. The welder will be required to perform welding procedures safely, ensuring that all welding activities are carried out in accordance with Company policies.

This position reports directly to the Chief Engineer.

  • Perform welding, flame cutting, and associated tasks as required to repair dredge components
  • Ensure that the permit to work and energy isolation procedures are strictly adhered to at all times, including fire watch requirements
  • Ensure an accurate oxygen and acetylene bottle count is submitted daily to dredge management
  • Ensure all welding activities are carried out in accordance with Company policies, class requirements and regulatory laws and regulations
  • Ensure an accurate inventory of consumables is maintained to facilitate all repair work, modifications, and general fabrication
  • Coordinate welding tasks with Chief Engineer and other department heads to meet operational requirements.
  • Inspect welded joints for visible formation, weld penetration and conformance specifications.
  • Perform daily inspections and maintenance on welding equipment.
  • Ensure oxygen and acetylene bottle are stored as per company policy and procedure.
  • Assist with duties other than welding as required.
  • Ensure that approved dredge operating procedures are adhered to at all times. Report all unsafe activities, situations, and potential hazards to supervisor
  • Ensure housekeeping is maintained in assigned areas.
  • Effectively use all safety and environmental tools. Maintain a clean job site, pick up all tools and equipment and secure job site each day to eliminate potential hazards.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
  • Actively participates in Safety and Environmental initiatives that will contribute to compliance of State/Federal regulations and improve existing Company programs.
  • This position frequently requires work away from home at remote project locations for extended durations.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

High school diploma or equivalent; or minimum of six months to one-year related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of experience, education, and/or training which provides the necessary welding skills, knowledge and abilities is required.

The employee should have 1-3 years’ experience in structural welding and must be able to pass Weld Test at a testing facility designated by the Company.

The employee must have:

  • Knowledge of practices and materials of the welding craft & trade and be capable of demonstrating proficiency to perform the job.
  • Knowledge of operation of various types of marine equipment and devices.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and supervisors.
  • Competencies: stress management/composure, teamwork, results-driven

PREFERRED SKILLS

PHYSICAL/MENTAL REQUIREMENTS

The employee must be able to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable workplace accommodation. The individual must also be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) to work or visit within areas where it is required. This includes hard hat, safety glasses, life vest, respirators, ear plugs, steel toed shoes, personal flotation devices (PFD’s), or other protective equipment as required by the work performed and location the work is being done.

In addition, Site Administrators must also be capable of:

  • Walking, stepping, climbing, or otherwise moving from one location on the job site to another, which may be of varying heights and access parameters.
  • Standing, stooping, twisting, bending, crouching, kneeling, squatting, climbing, or sitting repetitively and/or for long periods of time.
  • Repetitive movements by feet, shoulders, arms, wrists, hands and back in performance of work.
  • Must be able to lift and carry 30lbs individually. Anything greater than 30lbs and up to 60lbs will require additional lifting means.
  • Must be able to push and pull at peak force of 150lbs.
  • Climbing stairs and/or vertical ladders of a height of 6ft or greater.
  • Adapting to temperature changes, outdoor conditions, and prolonged exposure to dusty, wet, or humid conditions, loud noises, and vibration.
