Job description

Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following:
• Ability to examine material or product for surface defects such as cracks, pits, and incomplete welds.
• Ability to compare product with specifications and/or drawings to ensure completion of assembly.
• Ability to verify specified dimensions of product or material using a variety gages, instruments and equipment as applicable.
• Perform any requested or needed material inspection as part of the receiving process to include but not limited to, raw material, hardware, castings, etc.
• Ability to reject defective parts, and mark type of defect on part, container of parts, or inspection tag as applicable.
• Ability to interact with other departments as needed.
• Ability to resolve customer issues with Customer Service, Manufacturing and/or Engineering departments.
• Ability to calibrate equipment and measuring devices as required by calibration system.
• As appropriate, perform gage and instrument repair as part of the calibration process as well as when operators have concerns with their gages.
• Perform setup and in-process verification of product as needed. Additionally, as requested or needed, assist in machine setup and operation in various production areas.
• Provide appropriate quality training and mentoring of personnel in various production areas to ensure clear understanding of the operator's duties and expectations. This is done in conjunction with the area supervisors and/or assistants.
• Assist in the management of both our non-conformance tracking system and breakage system.
• Take lead role in troubleshooting and problem solving of daily production challenges that occur. This is done in conjunction with the area supervisors and/or assistants.
• Take an active role in reviewing existing processes for continuous improvement opportunities, targeting quality and other process waste, and communicate these opportunities to the area supervisor and/or assistants.
• Be proactive in identifying and recommending component changes that will result in improved quality, performance, assembly, etc.
• As needed or requested, participate in formal design reviews to provide input based on experiences and knowledge. This may go beyond that of quality related experience.
• Research, identify and recommend any tooling, gaging or equipment which could result in defined product or process improvements. This would include evaluating the cost components of the recommendations.
• Perform other duties and responsibilities as needed or required.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience
  • Four years of high school or vocational school or equivalent is preferred
  • Two-year degree from college or technical school in a technical discipline is highly desirable, 3 - 5 years related experience and/or training, or equivalent combination of education and work experience.
  • Inspector Certification is desirable, preferably through ASQ.

Language Skills
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals
  • Ability to write routine correspondence
  • Ability to speak effectively

Mathematical Skills
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to draw and interpret bar graphs or other forms of charting with minimal direction is preferred.
  • Ability to fundamentally understand metric equivalents is preferred.

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form

• Ability to comprehend basic quality concepts such as process variation, statistical process control (SPC), First Article Inspection Reports (FAIR).
Other Qualifications
• Ability to read shop orders and drawings.
  • Ability to use a micrometer and digital caliper, protractor and scale.
  • Ability to use an Optical Comparator.
  • Ability to use or learn to use Coordinate Measuring Machine (CMM) equipment for product verification. It is desirable that a candidate have the ability and understanding to develop inspection programs for the CMM.
