What is a drain tech?

Drain Techs, also known as drain technicians, are professionals who specialize in diagnosing, repairing, and maintaining drainage and plumbing systems. Their job typically involves clearing blockages, inspecting pipes with cameras, performing routine maintenance, and sometimes installing new drainage systems. Drain Techs use specialized tools and equipment to ensure water and waste flow smoothly through residential, commercial, and industrial properties. They play a critical role in preventing water damage and maintaining sanitary conditions.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a drain tech, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Drain Tech, you need a solid understanding of plumbing systems, basic mechanical aptitude, and often a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with drain cleaning equipment, pipe inspection cameras, and sometimes relevant certifications (like OSHA safety training) is expected. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective customer communication set top performers apart. These abilities ensure efficient diagnosis and repair of drainage issues, leading to satisfied customers and safe, high-quality work.

What are some typical challenges a drain tech might face on the job, and how are they addressed?

Drain Techs frequently encounter unexpected blockages, severe clogs, or difficult-to-access pipes, which can make troubleshooting more complex. These challenges are typically addressed through the use of specialized equipment such as drain cameras, hydro-jetters, and augers, as well as by collaborating closely with other technicians or plumbers for more complicated repairs. Maintaining strong problem-solving skills and staying up-to-date with the latest industry tools can help Drain Techs effectively manage these situations and ensure customer satisfaction.

What is the difference between Drain Tech vs Plumber?

Drain TechPlumber
Specializes in clearing and maintaining drains, sewer lines, and piping systemsPerforms installation, repair, and maintenance of plumbing systems, including fixtures and water supply lines
Requires certifications in drain cleaning and sewer line repairRequires plumbing license and certifications for water and gas systems
Works primarily in commercial and residential settings focusing on drain and sewer issuesWorks in similar environments but handles a broader range of plumbing tasks

Drain Techs focus specifically on drain and sewer line issues, often requiring specialized certifications. Plumbers have a wider scope, including water supply and fixture installation, and typically hold a plumbing license. While both roles work in similar environments, Drain Techs concentrate on drain systems, making their skills more specialized for drain-related problems.

What do drain technicians do?

Drain technicians inspect, clean, and repair drainage systems such as pipes, sewers, and drains. They use specialized tools like drain snakes and hydro-jetters to clear blockages and ensure proper flow, often working in confined spaces and requiring knowledge of plumbing codes. Certification and safety training are typically necessary for this role.

1 Tom Plumber Minneapolis North is a licensed, locally owned plumbing company (license #PC150266) serving the North Metro. We're growing and looking to add an experienced Drain Technician / Service Plumber to our team — someone who takes pride in doing the job right the first time and treating customers' homes with respect.
Position Summary
We need a hands-on tech who's comfortable running drain calls start to finish — diagnosing the problem, clearing it, and explaining it to the customer in plain language — while also handling general service plumbing repairs.
Responsibilities
  • Diagnose and clear drain stoppages in both residential and commercial settings
  • Run cable/snake machines for main line and branch line clearing
  • Perform descaling on cast iron and other scaled pipe
  • Operate a hydro-jetter for heavy grease, scale, and root intrusion
  • Perform camera inspections to locate and verify problems (or willingness to learn)
  • Complete general service plumbing repairs and installs — fixtures, water heaters, faucets, toilets, etc.
  • Provide customers with clear, honest diagnoses and pricing options on-site
  • Maintain a clean, organized, well-stocked service vehicle
  • Accurately complete work orders, invoices, and job documentation
Requirements
  • Proven experience in drain cleaning: cable/snake machines, descaling, and hydro-jetting
  • Working knowledge of both residential and commercial plumbing systems and repair
  • Valid driver's license with a clean driving record preferred
  • Ability to work independently, manage a daily schedule, and communicate professionally with customers
  • Physically able to work in crawlspaces, basements, and tight access areas, and lift equipment (jetter reels, cable machines, etc.)
  • High energy, sales-oriented mindset — comfortable presenting options and closing on-site while following good, better, best strategy.
Preferred
  • Journeyman Plumber license (MN)
  • Camera inspection / locating experience
  • Prior experience in a residential service plumbing company (flat-rate pricing environment a plus)
  • Commercial service plumbing experience
What We Offer
  • Competitive pay based on experience
    • Hourly plus commission, plus bonuses and incentives.
  • Health insurance plans available after 90 days
  • 401(k) available after 90 days
  • 40 hours of PTO after 90 days
  • Steady year-round work, no seasonal layoffs
