They use computer-aided design (CAD) software to translate engineers’ and architects’ ideas into precise diagrams and blueprints. Drafting Specialists may work in various industries, including architecture, engineering, and manufacturing, ensuring that all technical specifications are accurately represented. Their work is essential for communicating design intent and guiding the construction or production process.

How does a drafting specialist typically collaborate with engineers and architects during a project?

Drafting Specialists work closely with engineers and architects by translating their concepts and technical specifications into detailed technical drawings and blueprints. Throughout a project, they attend coordination meetings, review design changes, and incorporate feedback to ensure accuracy and compliance with industry standards. Effective communication and attention to detail are crucial, as Drafting Specialists often serve as a bridge between the design intent and the construction or manufacturing teams. This collaboration ensures that all stakeholders are aligned and that the final plans meet both functional and regulatory requirements.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a drafting specialist, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Drafting Specialist, you need strong technical drawing abilities, attention to detail, and typically an associate degree or certification in drafting or a related field. About Us

Highland Electric Fleets’ mission is to make electric fleets accessible and affordable for all, enabling communities to realize the benefits of cleaner, quieter and healthier fleets. Highland is North America’s leading provider of Electrification-as-a-Service (EaaS). Founded in 2019, Highland partners with school districts, municipalities, and fleet operators to make the transition to electric fleets simple and affordable.

Highland proudly serves as the Official Electric School Bus Provider of the LA28 Olympic and Paralympic Games and Team USA. From pioneering vehicle-to-grid technology to managing some of the nation’s largest electric school bus fleets, Highland delivers reliable, cost-effective solutions that support local communities and drive the future of transportation.

Job Summary:

The Drafting Specialist produces conceptual design packages that move Highland's projects from a qualified site to ready for engineering, across a large and fast-moving portfolio of EV charging, battery energy storage (BESS), and edge compute sites.

Reporting to the Engineering Manager, the Drafting Specialist turns buildable-area findings into template-driven conceptual layouts, prepares the drawing packages required for engineering. The Drafting specialist supports the coordination of Highland's external design partners to sustain a high weekly throughput of completed sites.

This is a hands-on, high-velocity CAD role for someone who takes pride in clean, standards-compliant
drawings produced at volume and on an aggressive timeline.

Responsibilities:
  • Set up project design templates and produce conceptual site layouts that translate qualified
sites with buildable areas into conceptual designs that identify equipment configurations (EV
    charging, BESS, and edge compute).
  • Support Highland's external drafting partners, reviewing their output for quality and driving the
    weekly volume of completed layouts.
  • Ensure conceptual layouts reflect the site constraints identified in qualification.
  • Support the maintenance of Highland's CAD standards, title blocks, symbol libraries, and design
package templates so drawings are consistent and repeatable across the portfolio.
  • Support with markups, revisions, and drawing production through the 30% and Issued-for-
    Permit (IFP) design stages.
  • Contribute to and maintain a repository of utility and Authority Having Jurisdiction (AHJ) drafting
    and drawing requirements.
  • Quality-check drawings for completeness and adherence to Highland package content and
structure before each internal approval gate and handoff.
Qualifications: Required
  • Associate's degree in drafting, design, engineering technology, or a related field, or 3+ years of
    directly related professional drafting experience.
  • Expertise in AutoCAD, with the ability to produce site layouts and civil/electrical drawing
    packages accurately and at volume.
  • Strong attention to detail and a track record of delivering standards-compliant drawings on tight
    timelines.
  • Familiarity with project management and drawing package review software (Procore, Bluebeam)
and with GIS, parcel, or site-plan data.
Preferred
  • Drafting experience in EV charging, BESS, solar, or utility/electrical infrastructure projects.
  • Experience coordinating or reviewing the work of external design vendors.

$65,000 - $75,000 a year

What You Can Expect from Highland:
  • Competitive base salary and performance-based bonus program
  • A supportive, highly collaborative, team-oriented environment
  • Ability to work with bright, innovative, and forward-thinking colleagues
  • Health, Vision, and Dental coverage for employees & their dependents
  • Generous Paid Time Off
  • 401(k) program and company match
