The Voice of Texas Agriculture.
Company Name: Texas Farm Bureau | Department: Government Affairs
To support the Texas Farm Bureau State Legislative Office in Austin Texas during the 2027 Regular Session of the Texas Legislature. This position provides a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience with the legislative process while developing practical skills in legal research, policy analysis, legislative drafting, and advocacy. The Legal Intern will work closely with the Government Affairs team to support legislative initiatives that advance Texas agriculture and rural communities.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND AUTHORITY
Conducting legal and policy research on proposed legislation, regulatory matters, and emerging issues affecting agriculture.
Reviewing, analyzing, and tracking legislation throughout the legislative process.
Preparing bill summaries, policy analyses, and legislative briefing materials for Texas Farm Bureau staff and leadership.
Drafting legislative correspondence, member communications, and content for the weekly Austin Newsletter distributed to Texas Farm Bureau members.
Attending and monitoring committee hearings, legislative meetings, and other Capitol proceedings.
Assisting in the development of legislative strategy by monitoring policy developments and preparing testimony, presentations, and advocacy materials.
Assisting with and independently drafting legislative amendments, bill language, legislative memoranda, and other legislative documents under the supervision of the Government Affairs team.
Collaborating with legislators, legislative staff, stakeholders, and industry leaders on issues impacting Texas agriculture.
Performing other duties as assigned.
MINIMUM POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
Availability to be in Austin, Texas during the duration of the regular session of the 90th Texas Legislature (January 12, 2027-May 31, 2027).
Knowledge of production agriculture and rural issues.
Current Law student classified as 2L or 3L.
Good organizational skills.
Ability and willingness to learn and extend skills.
Good verbal and written communication skills.
Excellent punctuality and attendance.
Ability to prioritize and handle time sensitive matters.
Interest in public policy issues, including but not limited to property rights, environmental regulations, water policy, administrative law, and agricultural law, preferred.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Repeated use of PC, telephone, and office machines.
Extended periods of sitting and concentrating.
Occasional bending, twisting, crouching, pulling, pushing and reaching in an office environment.
Occasional lifting and moving items weighing up to 30 lbs.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Occasional long, irregular work hours.
Travel as required.
