Job description

Position Title: Retail Materials Handler  

Department: Retail Operations 

Status: Part Time or Full Time/Non-Exempt  

Reports to: Retail Store Manager, Assistant Manager 

Position summary: The Retail Materials Handler is responsible for conveying donations, new inventory, storage materials, and salvaged goods within Goodwill’s retail locations. Typical tasks include assisting donors, sorting, and staging donations for production, and loading/unloading Goodwill trucks. Responsible for maintaining safety and organization in the production and donation areas, as well as operating simple machinery.  

Essential functions:  

  1. Greet each customer/donor, assist with unloading/loading items into vehicles, offer receipt, thank, and invite them back, providing a positive donation experience through attentive customer service.
  2. Present a positive public image for the organization by promoting Goodwill mission programs and services in all customer interactions. 
  3. Maintain accurate donor count sheets and report any issues/discrepancies to store management. 
  4. Operate material storage and handling equipment (jacks, stackers, gaylords, and barrels) in a safe and efficient manner while loading, unloading, or moving materials to and from Goodwill trucks and in the production area. 
  5. Use sound judgment in sorting donations, including items donated at the store, in donation drop boxes, and purchased donations from the warehouse; ensure items of value are not discarded.
  6. Maintain sufficient inventory at production are a workstation for uninterrupted, efficient production flow.
  7. Keep store management informed of any shortage of storage materials and donated goods. 
  8. Prepare paperwork and shipping labels per Goodwill protocols, for materials to be shipped or delivered, including e-commerce and items to be baled, salvaged, recycled, or discarded.
  9. Maintain truck dock, material handler kiosk, donation drop box, and other materials storage areas in a neat and orderly manner, in manner, in with Goodwill safety protocols.
  10. Maintain regular and reliable attendance and punctuality.
  11. Attend safety training and follow all safety procedures and protocols to ensure a safe and supervised work environment for all employees.
  12. Promote positive teamwork among co-workers.
  13. Perform other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications and required skills: 

  • Ability to use physical exertion such as prolonged periods of standing, walking, recurring bending, reaching, and climbing; ability to lift up to 50lbs. consistently.

Education and experience:  

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • 1year experience preferred as a materials handler in a manufacturing or retail environment, utilizing materials handling equipment.
