Job Description
About us:
Nestled along the banks of the Haw River, the Valley Golf Course (formally known as Indian Valley) offers the avid golfer a fair test of their golf game. The 18-hole Ellis Maples par 70 course is owned and operated by the City of Burlington and is available for regular and tournament play.
What you will do:
Golf Outside Maintenance Tech is required to be able to complete a large variety of tasks throughout the day. Groundskeeper tasks can be generally categorized as manual labor and are related to landscaping. Landscape maintenance tasks include: operating different types of mowers, raking of debris, use of string trimmers, operation of powered debris blowers, use of chainsaw, and operation of other motorized equipment. Must be able to identify wilt and diseased conditions.
Examples of Duties
Course Maintenance Responsibilities:
  • Perform a variety of essential golf course maintenance tasks, including raking bunkers, mowing greens, changing hole locations, hand watering, and blowing debris to ensure the course is in top condition for players.
  • Regularly fill ball washers and water coolers, ensuring golfers have access to necessary amenities during their round.
  • Move tee markers as needed to accommodate course play and adjust the layout for optimal experience.
Equipment Operation:
  • Operate various types of golf carts and utility vehicles for maintenance tasks, ensuring the safe and efficient completion of assigned duties.
  • Maintain a valid driver's license to fulfill the transportation needs for the job.
Additional Maintenance and Special Projects:
  • Assist with special projects on the course, such as irrigation repairs, fertilizer and chemical applications, and other general maintenance duties.
  • Collaborate with course leadership, including the Golf Course Superintendent and Assistant Superintendents, to ensure all tasks are completed according to course standards.
  • Occasionally work under the direction of a Foreman or Equipment Operator when necessary.

Qualifications

  • Strong mental acuity to analyze and interpret data, evaluate complex situations, define problems, make informed decisions, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Ability to demonstrate sound judgment under pressure and ensure safety and efficiency in all tasks.

  • Capacity to drive an automobile and navigate various terrains as needed to complete assigned tasks.
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Valid Driver's License

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
  • Ability to perform physically demanding duties with endurance and strength, including manual dexterity to safely operate equipment and tools, and stamina for prolonged periods of activity.
  • Vision and hearing capabilities sufficient to read safety documentation, including Safety Data Sheets and maps, detect subtle color distinctions, and communicate effectively with colleagues via phone, two-way radio, and in person.
  • Capacity to bend, twist, stoop, squat, reach overhead, and perform tasks that require physical strength, such as lifting up to 50 lbs. unassisted and 80 lbs. with assistance.
  • Sufficient physical mobility to move throughout the work environment, navigate uneven surfaces, and complete tasks in confined or awkward spaces.
  • Ability to maintain physical stamina during long hours of standing, walking, or sitting, often in outdoor environments exposed to challenging weather conditions.
  • Capability to work in various environmental conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and pre-dawn hours, while being exposed to allergens like pollen and dust, with no severe allergic reactions.
  • Work may involve exposure to potentially hazardous substances, such as pesticides, herbicides, snakes, or motor fuel, while taking necessary precautions.

The City of Burlington is required to enroll individuals in the Local Government branch of the North Carolina State Retirement System when they work in part-time positions that require more than 1000 work hours per calendar year.
