Primary Purpose:

Participates and manages the design, execution, analysis and evaluation of complex research activities, directly aligned with the professional goals of the hire and the goals of the Oceanographic Center, under the general supervision of an Oceanographic Center Faculty member.

Essential Job Functions: 

1. Conducts research in area of expertise, writing results for inclusion in broader research project.
2. Responsible for designing research projects and analyzing and interpreting findings using advanced computational genome bioinformatics and statistical analyses.
3. Designs and conduct advanced, whole genome sequencing-focused, laboratory bench
research.
4. Provides training to other laboratory research members in genomics-based methods including whole genome assembly and annotation to determine function and estimate population abundance and demographics.
5. Trains other research group members in cutting-edge, computational genome bioinformatics analyses.
6. Develops research collaborations with international fisheries management organizations.
7. Computational coding for genomics data analyses.
8. Designs and applies scientific and numerical models in research.
9. Monitors integrity of data collection and use of protocols and procedures.
10. Evaluates new technologies to enhance or complement current research.
11. Submits research for publication in peer-reviewed journals
12. Assists with mentoring graduate students
13. Serves on graduate student thesis and dissertation committees
14. Performs other duties as assigned or required.

Job Requirements: 

Required Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities: 1. Demonstrated ability to participate in collaborative efforts as a member of a diverse research team.
2. Active Listening - Proficient skills in giving full attention to what other people are saying, taking time to understand the points being made, asking questions as appropriate, and not interrupting at inappropriate times.
3. Critical Thinking - Proficient skills in using logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions, or approaches to problems.
4. Effective communication skills using the English language; research writing skills.
5. Science - Proficient skills using scientific rules and methods to solve problems.
6. Complex Problem Solving - Proficient skills in identifying complex problems and reviewing related information to develop and evaluate options and implement solutions.
7. Knowledge of computational programming and MS Office Suite programs; database and data entry skills
Physical Requirements:
1. Near Vision - Must be able to see details at close range (within a few feet of the observer).
2. Speech Recognition - Must be able to identify and understand the speech of another person.
3. Speech Clarity - Must be able to speak clearly so others can understand you.
4. May be exposed to short, intermittent, and/or prolonged periods of sitting and/or standing in performance of job duties.
5. May be required to accomplish job duties using various types of equipment/supplies, to include but not limited to pens, pencils, and computer keyboards.

Required Certifications/Licensures: 

Required Education: Doctorate Degree

Major (if required: Genomics and Bioinformatics related science

Required Experience: Up to two (2) years of experience in an academic or research environment.

Preferred Qualifications: 

Experience with Close-Kin Mark-Recapture Research Methods
