Job Description

Schedule: 11pm-7am (Off Wed. & Thurs.)

Position Summary

The Sergeant/Supervisor is responsible for directing the day-to-day operations on their assigned shift and collaborating with various campus departments/constituency groups. They ensure department policies and procedures are properly followed. The Sergeant must be able to supervise effectively and give corrective instructions/discipline when appropriate. They should possess critical decision-making skills; be able to respond effectively to emergencies; and diffuse/de-escalate potentially volatile situations. They ensure members assigned to their shift are effectively trained. They must engage in helping develop growth in department members and the department as a whole. They will handle specialty tasks and other duties as assigned. The supervisor should have excellent communication skills and be a team player (at the supervisory team level, promoting both the mission and vision of the Department and the College).

Safety and Security supervisors must be capable of and willing to work all shifts and overtime as needed. All shifts include all hours, days of the week, and holidays. Shifts may be reassigned on a short- and long-term basis according to departmental needs. Employment is contingent upon successful completion of one-year probationary period and successful result of a background search.

Responsibilities

  • Assigns Officers shift posts/ patrols.

  • Conducts shift briefings.

  • Informs and assigns officers to special details/ assignments occurring on shift.

  • Fills vacant shifts as needed.

  • Approves and manages time/leave in the College's timekeeping/payroll program (workday) and the department scheduling program (VCS) per College and Department guidelines.

  • Coordinates response to calls for service or emergencies with police, fire, EMS, or college service as needed.

  • Responds to all emergency calls for service that require supervisory (in depth, complicated or sensitive) action.

  • Prepares and/or directs immediate emergency notifications to the campus as appropriate.

  • Monitors the department computerized records management system for proper entries and information.

  • Monitors job performance of officers, corrects deficiencies, and prepares corrective action communications such as performance observations and verbal/written reprimands.

  • Trains officers in new procedures, use of equipment, etc.

  • Reviews and informs all officers of policy changes, updates, briefings and/ or special orders.

  • Communicates with other supervisors to relay important information.

  • Reviews officers' reports for accuracy and comprehensiveness.

  • Make notifications to senior Campus Safety personnel and other College officials regarding important information, incidents of a sensitive nature, per College and Department guidelines.

  • Sends daily DOC and other listserv reports.

  • Oversees field training occurring on their shift.

  • Assists with educational programming and other duties as assigned.

  • Assists with campus event security as needed.

  • Carries out other duties deemed necessary by senior Campus Safety personnel.

  • Responsible for reading, understanding, and responding to College and Department emails in a timely manner.

Required knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Possess and maintain a New York State Driver License for at least 2 years.

  • Possess a valid NYS Security Guard license or a valid 8-hour pre assignment training certificate with the ability to attain license within 30 days.

  • 30 college credits or formal supervisory training at a recognized agency or institution.

  • Working knowledge of the NYS Penal Law and general familiarity with/ability to learn relevant federal and state laws that apply to college campuses.

  • A strong service orientation and demonstrated ability to work in a diverse multicultural community.

  • Sufficient computer experience to be able to prepare reports and effectively use all software programs available to the department.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, written and verbal

  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations and to deescalate charged situations

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs. or more and move 75 lbs. or more.

  • Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.

  • Ability to work overtime as needed/mandated.

  • Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.

  • Ability to perform CPR/AED and CPR/AED certification required or attainable; ability to effectively use Narcan and Narcan certification required or attainable.

  • Ability to understand and follow specific instructions and procedures.

Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities

  • Associates degree or higher.

  • Supervisory experience.

  • Experience with community relations.

  • Experience overseeing or conducting employee training/field training.

Compensation

The starting hourly wage range for this role is $28.00 - $30.00 per hour.

$1.25 per hour shift differential for shifts worked 11pm-7am

$0.85 per hour shift differential for shifts worked 3pm - 11pm
