Job description

David Nice Builders is seeking an experienced Civil Superintendent to lead site operations for our commercial construction projects. This is a hands-on field leadership role responsible for overseeing all civil site work - including earthwork, grading, underground utilities, and foundation preparation - ensuring projects are completed safely, on schedule, within budget, and to the highest quality standards.
Reporting to the Head of Civil Division / Project Manager, you will directly manage site crews, subcontractors, and daily field operations while maintaining strong coordination with project management and the broader team. This is an excellent opportunity for a safety-focused, organized leader who takes pride in building strong sites and strong teams.
Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee all site preparation activities including grading, excavation, soil stabilization, compaction, and foundation work
  • Manage installation of underground utilities (water, sewer, stormwater, electrical) and coordinate inspections
  • Read and interpret civil/site plans, specifications, and contract documents; identify potential issues early
  • Lead, direct, and supervise field crews and subcontractors to ensure safe, efficient, and high-quality execution
  • Maintain the project schedule, update progress, and help meet all milestone dates
  • Enforce strict safety standards and OSHA regulations; conduct daily safety meetings and ensure full PPE compliance
  • Manage daily job documentation, photos, as-builts, timesheets, and progress reports (Procore/Trimble)
  • Track job costs, assist with change orders, and help deliver projects within budget
  • Coordinate inspections, testing agencies, and permitting requirements
  • Chair weekly progress meetings with project managers, clients, engineers, and subcontractors
  • Maintain professional appearance of company vehicles, equipment, and job sites
  • Support snow removal operations during winter months as needed

What You Bring (Qualifications)
Required:
  • Extensive experience in civil construction, specifically earthwork, utilities, and foundation preparation
  • Proven ability to successfully manage field teams and subcontractors on commercial projects
  • Strong ability to read and interpret civil/site plans, blueprints, and specifications
  • OSHA 30-Hour Construction Certification (required)
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook)
  • Experience with construction management software (Procore or Trimble preferred)
  • Excellent communication, problem-solving, and organizational skills
  • Valid driver's license and clean driving record

Preferred:
  • Prior experience on commercial, federal, or public sector projects
  • Knowledge of local codes and permitting processes in the Hampton Roads / Virginia region
