TERA-print is a Chicagoland based tech company with the bold ambition to revolutionize nanotechnology by developing innovative nanoprinting tools and applications. Our foundational technology, pioneered at Northwestern University, makes it possible to rapidly pattern a wide range of materials - metals, polymers, photoresists, DNA, proteins - on an equally wide range of surfaces, such as silicon, glass, or metal, over large areas and with high resolution.  The unparalleled flexibility of our technology makes it very attractive for a broad spectrum of applications in chemistry, materials science, physics, and biology.  Already, researchers from more than 50 institutions around the world are using TERA-printโ€™s desktop nanoprinters. 


Job Summary

TERA-print is in search of an Instrument Engineer to join our team.  In this role, you will work with researchers and scientists of different backgrounds to turn bold new ideas into tangible products and services that change the future.  Your skillset is critical to our work as we look to shape the next-generation of nanofabrication and semiconductor materials. You will be working in a fast-paced, collaborative environment with diverse expertise all focused on tackling important challenges for the future of advanced manufacturing.

Relevant experience and skills

  • BS or MS in Mechanical Engineering Electrical, Engineering, Applied Sciences or similar.  Bonus points for undergraduate degrees with industrial experience, and/or optical engineering
  • Experience in industry environments, through full-time employment or internships
  • Experience integrating 3rd party hardware, automation, mechatronics, robotics, embedded systems, software development, PCB design, data processing; experience with microfluidics and optics systems is a plus
  • Experience in programming languages such as Python, C#, and LabVIEW
  • Experience in 3D CAD modeling (AutoCAD, Solidworks, Fusion 360, Rhino or similar programs); experience with rendering (Cinema 4D, Keyshot, Solidworks Visualize or similar programs) is a plus
  • Ready to learn from failure, embrace an iterative process and you understand that success comes sooner with trial and error; you have experience delivering both low and high fidelity prototypes
  • Knowledge of manufacturing processes and working closely with engineers, delivering engineering drawings and specifying CMF (colors, material, and finishes)
  • Able to travel occasionally nationally and internationally (<10%)
  • Self-directed toward excellent work outcomes and comfortable in ambiguous, non-rules based environment
  • Bonus points if you have experience in microfabrication and working in a cleanroom environment
  • Bonus points if you have machine shop experience and training (i.e., you know how to manufacture detailed parts from metal stock using a lathe and mill)
