An opportunity exists for a Medical Technologist to join the Molecular Biology section at Warde Medical Laboratory. This is an exceptional opportunity to utilize your education, expertise and help us provide vital knowledge for medical care-givers.
POSITION PURPOSE
Performs various molecular diagnostic assays for use in diagnosis and treatment of disease. Analyzes and interprets test results, and ensures accuracy of same. Repeats tests as necessary, especially those yielding abnormal or atypical results, and notifies appropriate personnel of such results. Provides quality patient care considering age specific, developmental, and cultural needs of the patient. Demonstrates unit/area-designated competencies.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Follows established procedures and policies to perform all tests, pertinent to the section to which assigned.
  • Records and/or enters into laboratory computer results of tests performed and advises supervisor spurious, unusual or highly abnormal results before release of results for reporting.
  • Reports results of tests ordered stat and highly abnormal or unexpected results in a timely manner and according to established policies and procedures.
  • Compares test results with previous patient test results when indicated, calling attention of supervisor or pathologist to unusual fluctuations.
  • Performs required quality control and equipment maintenance and calibrates and operates laboratory equipment used in performance of the tests pertinent to the section) to which assigned.
  • Notifies appropriate personnel of problems such as unacceptable specimens, equipment malfunctions, and quality control aberrations, in accordance with department policy on procedure.
  • Prepares standards, reagents, and other materials used in testing.
  • Maintains good rapport and cooperative relationships: Approaches conflict in a constructive j manner. Helps to identify problems, offer solutions, and participate in their resolution.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of information acquired pertaining to patient, physicians, and employees. Discusses patient and hospital information only among appropriate personnel in appropriately private places.
  • Assumes responsibility for performance of job duties in the safest possible manner, to assure personal safety and that of coworkers, and to report all preventable hazards and unsafe practices immediately to management.
  • Demonstrates unit/area competencies.
  • Behaves in accordance with the Mission, Vision and Values of Trinity Health.

OTHER FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Takes an active role in departmental and sectional programs or projects to include research, procedure development, task force participation, cost savings initiatives and problem solving.
  • Assists in the training and orientation of new staff.

REQUIRED EDUCATION, EXPERIENCE AND CERTIFICATION/LICENSURE
  • Bachelor's degree in Science, BS in Medical Technology preferred.

REQUIRED SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Molecular Biology experience preferred - PCR, Next generation DNA sequencing, nucleic acid extraction techniques, etc.
  • Interpersonal skills necessary to effectively communicate with physicians, nursing unit personnel while reporting and explaining test results requesting or providing information.
  • Analytical skills necessary to interpret and analyze test results and determine appropriate course of action for abnormal and atypical results.
  • Ability to concentrate and pay close attention to detail when performing job responsibilities.
  • Organizational ability necessary to perform various tests on a large volume of samples with appropriate prioritization of work to ensure that results are provided in a timely manner according to the priority status of requests.
