Job description

Division Chief for General Surgery

Indiana University School of Medicine (IUSM) and Indiana University Health Medical Group are recruiting a Division Chief for General Surgery. The Division Chief will provide strategic and operational leadership across the full range of division service areas, including the tripartite missions of the academic institution: clinical and administrative service, education, and research.

This academic role in the Department of Surgery at IUSM will work with and represent 21 faculty members and 11 advanced practice providers covering 7 hospitals in the Indianapolis metropolitan area. In 2025, the division treated over 7,800 new patients and performed over 6,600 surgeries. The division offers a comprehensive range of surgical services, including colon & rectal surgery, minimally invasive surgery, bariatric surgery, hernia surgery, and general surgery. It also houses a nationally recognized Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery program and an Advanced Gastrointestinal Surgery/Bariatric Surgery fellowship that supports one fellowship position annually. The division mentors approximately 58 residents through one of the nation’s largest general surgery residency programs, providing extensive clinical exposure, mentorship, and multidisciplinary learning opportunities.

Responsibilities

The Division Chief will:

  • Provide strategic leadership, establishing annual academic priorities and mentoring the faculty.
  • Conduct comprehensive annual faculty reviews and actively participate in graduate medical education.
  • Oversee research initiatives, ensuring strong division financial performance, and lead the development and management of a substantial operating budget and annual discretionary funds.
  • Prepare and present financial and operational performance reports.
  • Foster effective collaboration with all functional areas across the Department of Surgery, IU Health Medical Group, affiliated hospitals, and partner physician organizations.
  • Drive program growth, expansion, thoughtful investment, and partnership at the regional and national levels.
  • Serve as an agent for change and continuous improvement across patient care, teaching, and research settings.
Basic Qualifications
  • A medical degree (MD, MD/MPH, MD/MBA, MD/PhD, DO) or equivalent with completion of an ACGME-accredited general surgery residency.
  • Board certified in Surgery or an appropriate surgical subspecialty.
  • Meet university criteria for appointment to the rank of associate or full professor.
  • Relevant administrative experience and evidence of effective interpersonal, collaborative, and communication skills.
  • History of academic leadership, industry or grant‑funded research (desired, but not required), and a nationally recognized reputation in general surgery.
  • Possession of, or eligibility for, an unrestricted medical license in the State of Indiana.
