Description
The Department of Public Safety at Jackson State University is accepting applications for its Dispatcher/Surveillance Monitors position.
Examples of Duties
  • Receive emergency service calls from the public requesting police or other emergency services.
  • Determine the nature, location, and priority of emergency.
  • Enter the appropriate information in the computer and forward calls to the dispatcher.
  • Answer calls for maintenance service emergencies during evenings, weekends, and holidays.
  • Use telecommunications systems to coordinate emergency calls and relay information and assistance requests involving other law enforcement agencies.
  • Enter, update, and retrieve information from NCIC relating to wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, stolen vehicles, and other information.
  • Receive, process, and transmit information to Federal, State, and local government agencies.
  • Respond to, type, and file printouts and document requests.
  • Responsible for answering all emergency and non-emergency calls via telephone and radio.
  • Speak clearly and understandably.
  • Maintain contact with all units on assignments.
  • Maintain the status and location of field units.
  • Enter updates, and retrieve information on wanted persons, stolen property, vehicle registration, and other information from statewide computer networks.
  • Exercise good judgement and make sound decisions in emergency situations.
  • Effectively communicate with and elicit information from upset and irate citizens.

  • Demonstrate excellent customer service skills and understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Able to function in an active and often hectic environment.
  • Able to take and relay messages and perform related duties and assignments.
  • Able to exercise independent judgment and work with minimum supervision.
  • Able to monitor camera surveillance feeds to detect suspicious or criminal activity.
