Description
 A little about us:
The Lieber Institute for Brain Development (LIBD) was established in 2010 to plot a new course in biomedical research that would change the lives of individuals affected with developmental brain disorders. We are one of the only research institutions in the world focused specifically on understanding how genes and the environment influence the way our brains develop that lead to conditions such as schizophrenia, autism, bipolar disorder and related developmental brain disorders. Through our cutting-edge research, answers are emerging and being translated into a robust pipeline of new drugs in development. And, by focusing on genes and their dynamic interplay with the environment, we are getting even closer to the "holy grail" in medical research, the discovery of strategies for primary prevention.
We are a group of dedicated, multidisciplinary and optimistic researchers, working at the cutting edge of science, utilizing state-of-the-art tools to unlock the mystery of the brain and transform the way we approach the development of new treatments, and ultimately cures. LIBD is an independent 501(c)(3) medical research institute located in the Bioscience Park on the campus of the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine and Hospital in Baltimore, MD.
Job Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and collaborative Staff Scientist with significant experience in human induced pluripotent stem cells (hiPSCs) and iPSC-derived neuronal models to join the Stem Cell Core at the Lieber Institute for Brain Development (https://www.libd.org/). This position is open to stem cell biologists seeking a role within a translational research setting with a focus on hiPSC-based modeling of neurodevelopmental and neuropsychiatric disorders. This position is housed within a team that establishes and maintains cell line resources and develops and implements hiPSC differentiation protocols into various brain cell types. The staff member will also contribute to ongoing, team-based research projects as part of mission-relevant Institute initiatives. Candidates should have extensive training in hiPSC culture and hiPSC-based neuronal modeling, and experience in disease modeling with large cohorts of iPSC lines is highly desirable. Responsibilities include cell culture, wet bench experiments, and data collection and analysis, as well as assisting with day-to-day Stem Cell Core management and scientific communication.
Overview of Duties:Â
- Perform all aspects of experiments related to hiPSC-based neuronal and disease models, including hiPSC reprogramming, culture, differentiation, and data collection and analysis
- Maintain detailed experimental records and ensure reproducibility of protocols
- Assist in postmortem dural fibroblast culture
- Assist in preparing cell materials upon request from internal and external researchers
- Assist with records, reports, filing, and chart maintenance for management of cell line repository as assigned
- Provide technical training and experimental design support to internal researchers for stem cell-related projects
- Effectively communicate with researchers to support cross-institute collaborative projects
- Other duties as assigned
Requirements
 Required Minimum Qualifications:
- Ph.D. in cell and molecular biology, neuroscience, or a closely related field
- Cellular and molecular biology experience
- Significant experience (3+ years) in hiPSC-derived neuronal culture and/or brain disease modeling
Required Special Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
- Strong troubleshooting skills and ability to independently resolve technical challenges
- Excellent communication and collaborative skills, with ability to work effectively in a team-based environment
- Flexible work schedule (this position will require work for extended hours and on weekends and holidays, depending on the cell culture schedule)
Familiarity with any of the following topics or techniques is a plus:
- hiPSC-derived brain organoid culture
- Genome engineering of hiPSCs and derived cell types
- Single-cell or spatially-resolved transcriptomic analysis
- Experience in a project of disease modeling with a large cohort of hiPSC lines
Physical Requirements:
-Remaining in a seated or standing position for extended periods of time;
-Reaching and grasping to manipulate objects with fingers;
-Mobility, including the ability to maneuver around a laboratory setting including the ability to move materials weighing up to 25 pounds;
-Communication skills using the spoken and written word;Â
-Having the ability to receive detailed information through oral communication;
-All other physical demands in a standard laboratory environment.
