A typical day as a DEM simulation professional involves preparing and running particle-based simulations, analyzing results, and refining model parameters to improve accuracy. You'll collaborate closely with engineers, scientists, or clients to understand project requirements and translate them into computational models. Additional responsibilities often include documenting findings, presenting results, and troubleshooting technical issues within simulation software. These tasks contribute directly to solving practical challenges in fields like mining, geotechnical engineering, pharmaceuticals, or material science. Teamwork and clear communication are especially important when integrating DEM analyses into larger engineering projects.
A Discrete Element Method (DEM) job involves using numerical simulations to model the behavior of granular materials, powders, and other discrete particle systems. Professionals in this field develop and apply DEM algorithms to study mechanical interactions in sectors like mining, pharmaceuticals, and engineering. Responsibilities typically include coding simulations, analyzing particle behavior, and optimizing industrial processes. Strong skills in physics, mathematics, and programming, particularly in languages like Python or C++, are beneficial.
To excel in a Discrete Element Method (DEM) role, a strong background in engineering, physics, or computational mechanics, often supported by a relevant degree, is essential. Familiarity with DEM simulation software (such as EDEM, LIGGGHTS, or Rocky DEM), programming languages (like Python or C++), and experience with high-performance computing are commonly required. Effective problem-solving, attention to detail, and strong collaboration skills help professionals investigate complex material behaviors within multidisciplinary teams. These capabilities are crucial for developing accurate models and providing actionable insights to drive engineering or industrial projects forward.

Bechtel Mining and Metals offers engineering, procurement, and construction services for customers in the mining sector across multiple commodities including Iron Ore, Bauxite, Alumina, Aluminium, Copper, Gold, Coal, Lithium and Rare Earths markets.
Headquartered in Santiago, Chile, the M&M global business unit also has offices in Brisbane, Perth and Adelaide in Australia along with execution units in the United States, Peru, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, India and other project locations around the world.
Bechtel are seeking personnel to join multiple existing and upcoming projects comprising copper/gold concentrators with associated ROM feed, ore handling, processing plant, tailings management facilities, and supporting infrastructure including water supply, power supply, maintenance facilities, offices, temporary and construction accommodation villages.
In this role, you will plan, develop and review design work of both in-house and external design providers. As Senior Mechanical Engineer, you will conduct field investigations and client interviews to determine work scope and cost estimates for a project’s mechanical aspects.
You will be responsible for coordination of the production of technical drawings, calculations, specifications and material take-offs for a project’s design, procurement and constructability aspects. You will additionally be responsible for supporting and reviewing engineering developed by third party engineering service providers in contribution to the overall project scope.
As a senior mechanical engineer you will facilitate technical discussions and design reviews, review vendor information, project and client design specifications and collaborating discipline design inputs. You will solve complex technical issues and ensure designs comply with all applicable regulations and standards.
This role will be responsible for the mechanical design of surface infrastructure inclusive of all air, water, fuel and reagent utilities services, and overview of mining bulk handling and process plant design by external consultants.
Your recommendations will resolve technical issues and ensure the unique and complex requirements of a project’s ROM to tailings mechanical requirements are met.
