Is disaster engineering a good career?

Disaster engineering is a specialized field focused on designing systems and infrastructure to withstand natural and man-made disasters. It requires knowledge of structural analysis, risk assessment, and often involves working with emergency response agencies, making it a valuable and impactful career for those interested in safety and resilience. Job prospects depend on industry demand, geographic location, and relevant certifications such as FEMA or structural engineering licenses.

What are some common challenges disaster engineers face in their day-to-day work?

Disaster Engineers often encounter rapidly changing situations that require quick decision-making, such as analyzing the structural integrity of buildings after an earthquake or coordinating mitigation plans amid unpredictable weather. Balancing technical solutions with available resources and timelines adds complexity to their work, as does the need to communicate findings to both technical experts and non-technical stakeholders. Collaboration with emergency response teams, government agencies, and community members is frequent, requiring flexibility and strong interpersonal skills. These challenges make the role dynamic and impactful, offering opportunities to develop innovative solutions that safeguard communities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in disaster engineering, and why are they important?

Thriving as a Disaster Engineer requires expertise in civil or structural engineering, risk assessment, and disaster mitigation, typically backed by a bachelor's or master's degree in engineering or a related field. Familiarity with GIS software, modeling tools like HAZUS, and certifications such as Certified Emergency Manager (CEM) are often expected. Strong problem-solving, communication, and teamwork abilities are vital for collaborating with emergency management professionals and conveying complex information to diverse audiences. These skills are crucial for designing resilient infrastructure, planning effective disaster responses, and ensuring public safety under pressure.

What is disaster engineering?

A Disaster Engineering job involves assessing, mitigating, and responding to natural and man-made disasters to minimize damage and protect lives. Professionals in this field work on designing resilient infrastructure, conducting risk assessments, and developing emergency response plans. They collaborate with government agencies, private organizations, and communities to enhance disaster preparedness and recovery efforts. Disaster engineers apply principles from civil, structural, and environmental engineering to improve safety and resilience in vulnerable areas.

Job description

Overview

Apogee has an exciting new opportunity for a Senior Network Engineer to provide support for the Executive Airlift Communications Network (EACN) support task order, which provides Command, Control, Communications (C3) services for multiple critical U.S. Government missions via multiple Air to Global Information Grid (GIG) Gateways (A2G2's) supported by a Systems Integration Lab (SIL).

This is a full-time position located on-site at Scott Air Force Base (SAFB), in Belleville, IL.

*** This position is contingent upon contract award.***

Responsibilities
  • Provide Network Tier 3 support to Senior Leader Command, Control, Communications Systems-Airborne (SLC3S-A) Operations, Mobility Air Forces (MAF) Operations, Air Force Global Strike Command's (AFGSC) E-4B aircraft, also known as the National Airborne Operations Center (NAOC), and U.S. Navy E-6B Mercury aircraft.
  • Provide Network Tier 3 support to EACN Air to GIG Gateways (A2G2s), EACN Systems Integration Laboratory (SIL), and the Government Security Operations Center (GSOC).
  • Provide network analysis and design services to engineer, evaluate, and recommend new technologies to meet new EACN requirements and optimize network/system performance.ย
  • Assist the EACN Government Engineers with overarching oversight of the EACN platform, inclusive of Configuration/Change Management, Technical Architecture, and current/future state planning.
  • Assist in troubleshooting network issues experienced at JBA and JBLM operational A2G2's and platforms that access the A2G2.
  • Support the EACN A2G2 hardware configuration and installation requirements once approved by the EACN Government Engineers for site installation.
  • Establish and maintain the A2G2 baseline configuration (EBC) and SIL, which includes installation and functional testing of new software versions, Time Compliance Technical Orders (TCTOs), patches, TCNOs and other applicable directives.ย
  • Implement modifications to the A2G2 baseline configuration to support communications for additional Operational Support Aircraft/Executive Airlift (OSA/EA), Mobility Air Forces (MAF), and Roll-On/Roll-Off (RORO) assets as required.
  • Assist to install, remove or replace equipment, make configuration changes, or train new incoming Government and/or contractor personnel specifically on A2G2 configuration standards at the operational A2G2 sites (JBA, JBLM, and SAFB).ย
  • Provide the EACN Government Engineers with a Network Installation and Configuration Guide prior to any changes made to the operational system, network, or gateway.
  • Ensure any new hardware, software, or configuration changes are documented in the applicable deliverable format, installed, and tested in the SIL before changes are made at operational A2G2's.
  • Provide technical support to configure and maintain a test and evaluation gateway as an extension of the EACN SIL to assist with troubleshooting, A/C Developmental Test and Evaluation (DT&E) and Operational Test and Evaluation (OT&E) efforts, and act as a baseline configuration for the operational gateways.
  • Update local checklists, policies, diagrams, and documents related to the EACN as required IAW EACN Engineers guidance.
  • Perform network/system backups IAW DISA STIG and EACN Government Engineers guidance.
  • Review and recommend configuration changes to the EACN Government Engineers, keep abreast of future upgrades, develop solutions, identify deficiencies, perform system changes, modify configurations as requested by the EACN Government Engineers, and identify new requirements to the EACN Government Engineers.
  • Provide technical and configuration information as necessary to support all three A2G2's (JBA, JBLM, SAFB) actions for this task.
  • Create scripts, executables, graphs, and maps to configure and utilize networked computers.
  • Keep servers running by performing disk management, cleanup, backups, and associated approved updates/patches.
  • Configure and maintain the servers to allow streamlined/secure connection to all compatible network devices and use Simple Network Management Protocol (SNMP) tools to gather statistics.
  • Provide technical and configuration information as necessary to support trend analysis on the network's availability, utilization, outages, and overall system health.
  • Review configurations, operating, and troubleshooting procedures to include routers, switches, firewalls, classless inter-domain routing configurations, variable length subnet nak schemes, domain name services, network management services, encryptions, and satellite transmissions.
  • Configure and implement in-depth fault tolerance on disaster recovery solutions on servers and network devices.
  • Support and sustain the Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) capability installed in the Scott SIL and in the JBA/JBLM/SAFB operational A2G2 environment.
